Corel Valley is a location in Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. It is a valley on the northern continent of the planet, north of Bone Village and the Sleeping Forest, that is home to the City of the Ancients, a past settlement of the Cetra.

History[]

In Final Fantasy VII, during "Parting with Aeris", the party descended beyond the Sleeping Forest into the Corel Valley to find Aerith Gainsborough in the Forgotten City. After her death, the party continued following Sephiroth. Cloud Strife hallucinated Sephiroth walking towards the Corel Valley Cave, and in "Beyond the Snow Fields", the party headed through it toward the snow.

Two years later, in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, the remnants of Sephiroth brougth several children suffering from Geostigma to the Forgotten City lake to infect them with negative lifestream energy. The children were saved by Cloud and Vincent Valentine.

Geography[]

ForgottenCapitalLoc

The world map location of Corel Valley in Final Fantasy VII, indicated by the crosshair.

The valley is located in the middle of the northern continent of the planet, connects to the Sleeping Forest, and contains the Forgotten City. From the world map in Final Fantasy VII, the Forgotten City is viewable as a dome at the end of the valley.

Being located on the northern continet, the valley is cold and boreal, mostly comprising rocky hills, with limited flora. The flora present somewhat resemble corals but on land, and grew in between the rocks. Many of the rocks have a green surface that can be seen from the world map above.

The valley connects to the Sleeping Forest in a small forest exit area where a road leads from the thick, green forest onto the more barren rocks of the valley. The road continues to a winding road through the valley, which overlooks and ultimately leads to the Forgotten City, with the snowy mountains viewable from the distance.

On the other side of the Forgotten Capital is the Corel Valley Cave. Its valley-side entrance sits high above ground-level, accessible by a climbable conch shell. The cave is vertical, connecting the land above the valley to the bottom of the valley. It ultimately leads out to the snow fields and then the Icicle Inn.

Gameplay[]

Corel Valley is visited during "Parting with Aeris". It can only be entered after the player has the Lunar Harp from Bone Village that allows them to pass through the Sleeping Forest. A few enemies are fought in the Corel Valley area, and present a good opportunity for players to level up Limit Breaks.

The cave, and the exit onto the snowfields, is visited during "Beyond the Snow Fields". This portion is a vertical climb in which players may look for rare items by navigating the climb correctly.

Corel Valley also presents another opportunity to learn Death Sentence for the Enemey Skill Materia.

Musical themes[]

"In Search of the Man in Black" plays in both Corel Valley and Corel Valley Cave field areas.

Behind the scenes[]

There is evidence that the Ancient Forest was going to be connected to Corel Valley early on in development of Final Fantasy VII. The first screen of Corel Valley in Final Fantasy VII has a cave with a vine dropping down from its entrance, which cannot be climbed, nor does the entrance have any data associated with it. Dummied text from Bone Village that suggest a non-player character would give a tutorial for Ancient Forest, which in the final game, appears in a geographical location very far from Corel Valley or the Sleeping Forest. Lastly, field files in the game, which mostly order fields based on the order they are introduced in the game, order the Ancient Forest fields after the Sleeping Forest, but before the Corel Valley screens.[1]

Etymology[]

The literal translation of the valley's name is "Coral Valley", referring to coral, the marine invertebrates. The name was originally mistranslated as "Corral Valley", and later mistranslated again as "Corel Valley". Corel is a town and portion of the world map unrelated to Corel Valley.

Precious coral is the common name given to Corallium rubrum and several related species of marine coral. The distinguishing characteristic of precious corals is their durable and intensely colored red or pink skeleton, which is used for making jewelry.
