Take control of a monster.
Description
Control is a Beastmaster command ability in Final Fantasy V. It gives a 40% chance to take control of an enemy that is not immune to the ability, at which point the player can command it to use its various abilities. Control is not innate to Beastmasters, but is learned upon leveling up Beastmaster to job level 2, at which point it can be equipped by any job.
Obtained[]
Control is not innate to Beastmasters, and cannot be used until reaching job level 2 as a Beastmaster, at which point any job can equip it. Job level 2 requires 60 AP total as a Beastmaster.
Mechanics[]
Control has a 40% chance of controlling an enemy that is not immune. With the Hypno Crown equipped, it has a 75% chance of success. An enemy who is controlled has the Controlled status, and its sprite flips horizontally so they face the other direction. When Controlled, the controller cannot attack; instead, on their turn, the enemy under control moves instead.
If the enemy is under berserk or confuse, or is already being controlled, the status will miss. The status stays until the controlled enemy is either killed or hit with a physical attack, or until the controller dies or gets inflicted with certain negative statuses, such as sleep or petrify.
The Control command is a component in the Control glitch present in the North American and Japanese GBA ports.
The following enemies are immune to Control (all bosses besides Enkidu are inherently immune):
- ???
- Abductor
- Bandercoeurl (Phoenix Tower)
- Blue Dragon
- Crystal Dragon
- Death Claw
- Exdeath's Soul
- Ghidra
- Grand Mummy
- Iron Giant
- Kuza Beast (Phoenix Tower)
- Magic Pot
- Neo Garula
- Octokraken
- Pas de Seul
- Ricard Mage
- Sucker
- Zombie Dragon (Metamorph)
Use[]
Control is most useful for the Blue Mage job. This allows them to learn the Blue Magic spells White Wind, Mighty Guard, and Transfusion, which enemies do not normally cast on the player. It is also useful on some hard enemies, such as Shield Dragon, which can be commanded to kill itself with its own Blaze ability, or King Behemoth, which can destroy itself with ????.
