Equips "Comet" magic

Description

Single slot. Comet is a Magic Materia in Final Fantasy VII equipped to provide the powerful non-elemental comet spells: Comet, which deals heavy damage to a single enemy; and Comet2, which launches four random comet attacks. Neither spell can be reflected nor resisted by any elemental resistance, making them both very potent spells.

Obtained[]

Comet is a rare Materia, only found in the Forgotten Capital, inside a dwelling. The only way to obtain multiple Comet Materia is to master it, which requires a large 60000 AP. This means it is best to equip weapons and armor that provide Double or Triple AP to do so.

Stats[]

Growth[]

Level AP required Effect
1 0 Comet
2 12000 Comet2
3 60000 MASTER

Abilities[]

Magic MP Formula Power Effect
Comet 70 Magic 80 Major non-elemental damage. Cannot be reflected.
Comet2 110 Magic 30 Moderate non-elemental damage to random enemy target. Four attacks. Cannot be reflected.

Use[]

The Comet Materia grants two tiers of the Comet spell. The first launches a single attack that provides heavy damage to one target, while the second launches four attacks at random enemies each for moderate damage, overall amounting to almost twice that of a single Comet attack. The spells are non-elemental, meaning that though they cannot exploit an elemental weakness, they also cannot be resisted by an elemental resistance. This and both spells bypassing Reflect make them useful in all scenarios.

Comet's spells deal damage based on the Magic stat, but it comes with fairly significant stat changes. It provides +5% to max MP, +2 Magic, and +1 Magic def, but -5% HP, -2 Strength -2, and -1 Vitality. It is better to give Comet to characters built towards spellcasting with higher MP and Magic stats to take advantage of it. Good characters are Red XIII, Yuffie, Cait Sith, and Vincent. Cloud can also be a good choice as he can be built towards either magical or physical damage.

Comet's spells can also be paired with Support Materia to further boost their damage further or provide various effects. MP Turbo and Quadra Magic amplify its already significant damage even further, while HP Absorb can provide durability to the caster, and MP Absorb mitigates the high MP cost of the spells. As both its spells are useful against all targets with no drawbacks, Comet can be a great choice to pair with Magic Counter and counterattack an attack made against the character. Unlike most Magic Materia, Comet cannot be paired with All.

Etymology[]

A comet is an icy small Solar System body (SSSB) that, when close enough to the Sun, displays a visible coma (a thin, fuzzy, temporary atmosphere) and sometimes also a tail. These phenomena are both due to the effects of solar radiation and the solar wind upon the nucleus of the comet.

It is called "meteorite" in Japanese. A meteorite is a solid piece of debris, from such sources as asteroids or comets, that originates in outer space and survives its impact with the Earth's surface. It is called a meteoroid before its impact.
