The Coeurl, also known as the Krull or Quirl, is an enemy from Final Fantasy II. This recurring monster makes his first appearance in this game and is a dangerous enemy for a few reasons, the most important being the use of Blaster X.

A group of Coeurls guard a chest on the sixth floor of Castle Palamecia containing a Sun Blade.

Battle Edit

Coeurls can use the Blaster X skill, which causes Paralysis and is cast on the entire party. Blaster X also has a high hit rate and is non-elemental, which means it bypasses protection from equipment; even the Ribbon cannot block Blaster X. Its normal attacks can also inflict Instant Death. On top of that, they usually show up in groups and with Lamias and/or Lamia Queens, which are dangerous enemies in their own right. For this reason, they should be dispatched quickly. If the player has it, a high-level Confuse spell on a group of Coeurls can be very effective, because they then use their instant death attacks and Blaster on each other; alternately, a high level instant death spell such as Teleport or Toad can write them off in one hit.

Etymology Edit

The coeurl is a fictional alien race created by science-fiction writer A. E. van Vogt. Coeurls also appear in other fantastical environments, such as the game Dungeons & Dragons (as "Displacer Beasts"). Coeurls are generally described to be feline with longer forelimbs and tentacles.
