Cockatrice, and the subspecies Ziz, are large, lumbering, flightless birds. Ziz, found in the Near East, are much more brightly colored than their Middle-Lands counterparts. They have even been tamed by the Mamool Ja to be used as pack and mount birds, in addition to being deployed as free-roaming guards throughout Mamook, and being used by the Mamool Ja in assaults on Al Zahbi.

Naturally aggressive animals that will attack on sight with their powerful beaks and petrifying gaze, their large size and nasty temperament can make them a rather imposing presence to many explorers of Vana'diel.

Upon defeating these birds, adventurers may be rewarded with their meat, which is a highly desired commodity for cooks across Vana'diel. The skin is also valued, as it is used in a number of moderately high-level synthesis recipes.

Etymology[]

The Cockatrice is a creature from mythology. It is similar to the basilisk in appearance and ability, but also possesses flight. A cockatrice is born from an egg hatched by a rooster and incubated by a toad, and its gaze causes instant petrification.
