Template:FFIV Enemies The Clockwork Dragon, also known as Mech Dragon or D.Machine, is an enemy from Final Fantasy IV. It is noteworthy for being a particularly evasive and rare monster when attempting to complete the Bestiary in the PSX, GBA, DS, and PSP versions. It is something of an optional mini-boss, appearing only on the Giant of Babil's Inner Stair (the same place one fights the Elemental Archfiends). The long, bridge-like area it appears in and its relatively low encounter rate is a reference to Warmech from Final Fantasy.

Strategy

With a devastating melee attack, high hit points, and an extremely powerful, party-affecting fire attack, the Clockwork Dragon is likely to be the player's first real taste of the "end of game" dragons, such as the more powerful Blue and Red Dragons, which will appear in the Lunar Subterrane.

In the original SNES release, the Clockwork Dragon is weak to Lightning, but in all of the remakes, it possesses no actual weaknesses. As it can inflict a lot of damage quickly, it is heavily advised to take advantage of Fusoya's ready access to spells like Meteor, Flare, and Holy (Ability) to wear down its HP quickly. Rydia should use Bahamut and Leviathan for much the same reason. A very easy way to vanquish it is to simply have Rydia or Fusoya cast Stop on it, causing the Clockwork Dragon to be completely helpless, allowing Cecil and Edge to easily wear down its HP.

Special care should be taken in the DS release, as the Clockwork Dragon deals considerably more damage (a fact true of a great many enemies in this remake). Use of Slow to reduce its speed will be of considerable help, but it is otherwise a similar battle to the other releases, damage and HP aside.
