The Claymore is a greatsword in Final Fantasy XII usable with the Greatswords 1 license. In the Zodiac versions, its treasure is always present on the Cerobi Steppe. The Steppe is accessed in-between the two storyline greatswords (Sword of Kings and the Treaty-Blade), and the Claymore is stronger than either of them. Though it is the weakest non-plot related greatsword, it is among the strongest weapons available at the time it can first be obtained. Unlike with many other weapon types, the early greatswords' stats were not lowered for the Zodiac versions, and their costs to obtain were not reduced. Greatswords become an alternative weapon type to one-handed swords for the Knight mid-game.

The Claymore's license costs 50 LP. In the Zodiac versions, it can be used by the Knight, White Mage and Red Battlemage. The White Mage needs to unlock Zodiark to reach it on the board, and the Red Battlemage unlocks it with Ultima (and Greatswords 4 with Zodiark).

Basch holds the Claymore in his official render.

Etymology[]

The claymore was a type of large, two-handed blade. It was used by Scottish troops circa 1500 - 1700 CE. The word comes from the Gaelic claidheamh mor meaning "very big sword", although the name was probably not used contemporaneously with the actual weapon.
