First chocograph

Zidane finds his first Chocograph.

A stone slab buried in the forest.

Chocographs (チョコグラフ, Chokogurafu?) are rare stones in Final Fantasy IX that serve as "treasure maps." They guide the player to treasure chests that can only be found using chocobos.

Chocographs are found by digging in the minigame Chocobo Hot and Cold played in Chocobo's Forest, Chocobo's Lagoon and Chocobo's Air Garden. There are 24 in total, and they appear randomly at dig sites. Treasure boxes found contain many rare items, and sometimes transport Choco to Chocobo's Dream World giving him new abilities and color. If the treasure contains a Tetra Master card and the player's card quota is full, the card appears to have been discarded. However, if the player collects all chocograph treasures they can reclaim the discarded cards from Fat Chocobo in Chocobo's Paradise.

Etymology

"Choco" is short for "chocobo". The name "chocobo" derives from a Japanese brand of chocolate malt ball by Morinaga, ChocoBall (チョコボール, Chokobōru?). The mascot for this product is Kyoro-chan (キョロちゃん?), a bird who says "kweh".

食う / くう / kuu is a rough way to say "eat", whose volitional casual form is 食え / くえ / kue ("let's scoff 'em down!"), leading to Kweh!

The "graph" suffix may relate to "photograph" or "cartograph".
