Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is a sequel to Chocobo no Fushigina Dungeon. Unlike its predecessor, it was released in North America, in late 1999.
Gameplay[]
The player plays as Chocobo, who explores dungeons with a partner, which can be controlled by a second player. The dungeons are randomly generated. The battle system is not like those of most Final Fantasy games—it is more action-oriented, allowing the player to walk around and position Chocobo strategically for battle.
Perhaps the most unique feature in Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is the item system. Though having claws, collars and saddles as equipment is a novelty by itself, the most unique feature is the fusion system. Stoves allow the player to combine claws or saddles to create newer, more powerful ones. As for the magic system, the player must collect books and use them against enemies in which the corresponding spell element will level up after enough uses. Feathers can be collected to change the area of effect of spells, or allow the player to unleash new types of spell effects.
Aside from spell books, the player can collect summon stones, which can be used to summon original Final Fantasy summons such as Ifrit or Shiva.
When Chocobo is KO'd, he loses all his items and gets transported back to the village, forcing the player to restart the dungeon or resume from a shortcut. Some of the items lost may occasionally drift ashore for the player to recollect at a later time. As the game progresses, Chocobo can obtain gil and buy items in a nearby village, or rent storage space to store items, safeguarding them in the event that Chocobo is KO'd.
Some of Chocobo's allies are Final Fantasy originals such as Mog, Chocobo's partner; Shiroma, a White Mage; and Cid, the machinist who lives in a tower.
Setting[]
Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is set in an unnamed village inhabited by monsters. Up north the path leads to Cid's Tower and east of the village leads to a beach on a lake that opens to a vast sea. North off the path leads to a forest, a swamp, and a large mountain known as Snow Mountain. Also across the lake is the mysterious dungeon. Throughout the game, the world map changes a few times.
Characters[]
- Chocobo - The protagonist of the series, Chocobo and Mog go treasure hunting one day and find the mysterious dungeon and venture deep into it. The player always controls Chocobo in the game; he is able to equip claws as weapons, saddles as armor, and collars as accessories. Chocobo can also equip stones and empty bottles to kick at enemies or use to venture to secret areas of a dungeon floor.
- Mog - Chocobo's friend, he becomes a partner in the beginning and in the Final Dungeon. He is able to steal items from enemies if Chocobo does not have any items or only has a few.
- Shiroma - A White Mage with a mysterious past who was hated by everyone in the village for being a human, she partners up with Chocobo in the beginning and in the Sea Floor Dungeon. She is able to heal Chocobo once every floor depending on Chocobo's level.
- Cid - A machinist who lives in a tower far from the village. Being a human, he was despised by everyone in the village. He helps Chocobo in Cid's Tower when it is under attack by imps, and on the way to Snow Mountain. As a person of machines, Cid has a high attack stat and is able to plant mines if Chocobo talks to him in the dungeon area.
Other than these four, there are other characters from the village in the game that will help Chocobo in some way (e.g.: Chubby Chocobo buys and sells items, Gamedon repairs Chocobo's claws and saddles, the Black Mages offer Chocobo Dispel Tonics and use of the stove, etc).
Story[]
They meet Shiroma's "aunt", Mrs. Bomb and her three children and they are rather hostile towards her. Mrs. Bomb is rather polite to Chocobo and Mog though and offers them a place to stay although Chocobo can still stay in Shiroma's house if the player chooses to. At Mrs. Bomb's house, they talk about the submerged dungeon and they needed a way to get to it. They suggest a submarine that Cid owns and they needed a way to get to his tower. Chocobo goes to Shiroma's house and she tells him that her childhood friend, Chubby Chocobo, had the key to Cid's tower. After meeting with Chubby Chocobo at his shop, Chubby Chocobo unlocks the door to the door to the tower and Chocobo enters it after witnessing an event featuring Cid in his tank being exploded out of the tower.
Chocobo meets with Cid and even though Cid initially mistook him for a monster, he is able to trust Chocobo and traverse the tower with him. The two eventually meet Bahamut, the Keeper of Time. After telling the two about the Imps, Bahamut disappears. Chocobo and Cid carried on and defeated the Imps on the top floor to free his tower. Cid thanks Chocobo for helping him and he uses his submarine to cross the ocean to the dungeon where Shiroma was already waiting for him while Chocobo dived underwater.
At the Sea Floor Dungeon, Chocobo and Shiroma eventually made their way very deep in the dungeon before encountering Bahamut again, who tells Shiroma about her past. Bahamut then warns her to turn back, but she presses on with Chocobo. They then take a break later on and Shiroma is attacked by a skeleton. Shiroma talks about herself a little more and they proceed to face Ultros from Final Fantasy VI. They defeat him and proceed onwards where Shiroma gets kidnapped by Imps. Chocobo tries to kick the big doors open but by the time he does so, the Imps teleport Shiroma away and Chocobo meets the Glass Goth for the first time, who desired power, before it teleported as well. Chocobo picks up the pendant that Shiroma dropped before leaving.
Back at Mrs. Bomb's house, Mrs. Bomb was still hostile towards Shiroma even though she was kidnapped before Cid tells her that her of all people know that she doesn't act like that. Cid then tells Chocobo that Bahamut told him that Shiroma was sighted at the Snow Mountain Dungeon and Cid goes ahead to wait for Chocobo at the forest. The two made their way through the dungeon and find a huge ice block that prevented them from progressing. Mrs. Bomb then appears and shows the two that she's had a change of heart and uses a technique to blow up the ice block and become two smaller Mrs. Bombs. Chocobo and Cid continue on and encounter the Glass Goth. They defeat him in battle and the Glass Goth retreats. Chocobo then goes on without Cid and finds Shiroma, who is using her pendant to return home, which makes Chocobo let out a loud cry.
Back at Shiroma's house, Chocobo becomes dejected, but the dungeon that was underwater begins to activate and soars high into the air. Realizing that Shiroma was in that dungeon, Cid tells Chubby Chocobo to rally up the villagers while Chocobo and Cid return to Cid's Tower to carry out their plan. Bahamut appears again during the trip and he asks Cid to lend them his power as he didn't want to leave. Cid does so and it makes Bahamut very happy. He then teleports away and Chocobo and CId carry on. They get to the top floor to defeat the Imps there and begin the assault on the dungeon. The villagers work together and the dungeon comes crashing down.
Mog then appears and tells the two that he should go to that dungeon and also apologizes for making them go first and he waited at the forest for Chocobo. Chocobo and Mog make their way through the dungeon and encounter Bahamut. He shows the two an event that involved Mog bullying the Kuz that made the crystal act up and it granted him his wish to give him power and to never be bullied again and became the Glass Goth. Bahamut then disappeared and they proceed to meet the Glass Goth, who had powered up and was given two new forms. After Chocobo and Mog defeated each form, the dungeon started shaking and Chocobo runs off the platforms and ends up teleporting. After emerging, he finds Shiroma and she gets on his back as they try to escape. They both get knocked off and Chocobo is taken to Shiroma's house.
At Shiroma's house, Cid asks them if they found Shiroma and Mog says they didn't, but Chocobo says otherwise and was also safe. Cid then brings in someone and it ended up being the Kuz that became the Glass Goth. The Kuz then uses its own power to send its soul into the doll that Shiroma had made and it comes to life. Shiroma then appears and tells the doll that it can start over. Shiroma then takes her hood off and Chocobo runs up to her in tears before she gives him a kiss. Mog then packs his things and tries to leaves, but Shiroma tries to stop him and Mog tells her that he's leaving Chocobo behind and leaves. He is then stopped by Chocobo which surprised Mog and Chocobo waves goodbye to Shiroma and the two leave. The ending credits then play.
After they finish, a post-credits scene sees Kuz finding Chocobo and Mog sleeping at a campsite holding a letter from Shiroma. It decides to sleep as well.
During the post-game after the player clears the resurrected dungeons and the secret dungeon, the secret ending movie plays. Chocobo is seen running to Shiroma's house while seeing his friends doing crazy things. Chocobo enters Shiroma's house and that is where the story ends.Etymology[]
(チョコボール, Chokobōru?). The mascot for this product is Kyoro-chan (キョロちゃん?), a bird who says "kweh".
The name "chocobo" derives from a Japanese brand of chocolate malt ball by Morinaga, ChocoBall食う / くう / kuu is a rough way to say "eat", whose volitional casual form is 食え / くえ / kue ("let's scoff 'em down!"), leading to Kweh!
Trivia[]
- In the DS version of Final Fantasy IV, Edward's description of the "Chocobo Theme" was "They're probably all off playing in some mysterious dungeon now."
