Appearances

Final Fantasy VIII

ChocoMeteor is used by Boko when he is summoned into battle using Gysahl Greens, and is his second-most powerful attack. Boko only learns ChocoMeteor if the player trains him in the Chocobo World, meaning most international players never get to see the attack.

Its damage is calculated as follows:[1]

Final Fantasy X-2

Choco-Meteo is used by chocobos when encountered as opponents. It consists of twelve non-elemental attacks that reduce a random party member's HP by 12.5% with each hit, although by chaining the hits may deal additional damage. This attack is only used by bold chocobos - timid and normal chocobos will never use it.

Final Fantasy XII

Choco-Comet is used by all forms of chocobos when fought as enemies, including the Trickster mark. It does high magic damage to all enemies. It is especially dangerous when fought against the Lv.99 Red Chocobo.

Final Fantasy Tactics

Choco Meteor is used by Red Chocobos and does high damage to a single target. It targets a single square within five squares of the user.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift

Choco Meteor is once again exclusive to Red Chocobos, and does magic damage to all target within the area of effect.

The Chocobo Knight can use this ability while in control of a Red Chocobo.

Etymology

"Choco" is short for "chocobo". The name "chocobo" derives from a Japanese brand of chocolate malt ball by Morinaga, ChocoBall (チョコボール, Chokobōru?). The mascot for this product is Kyoro-chan (キョロちゃん?), a bird who says "kweh".

食う / くう / kuu is a rough way to say "eat", whose volitional casual form is 食え / くえ / kue ("let's scoff 'em down!"), leading to Kweh!

A meteor or "shooting star" is the visible streak of light from a meteoroid or micrometeoroid, heated and glowing from entering the Earth's atmosphere, as it sheds glowing material in its wake. Meteors rarely explode in the Earth's atmosphere. The term has become associated with quickness with the adjective "meteoric". In the context of myth and superstition, meteors and comets sighted in Ancient and Medieval Europe were once held as ill omen, said to be the message of the heavens' displeasure of man's affairs to herald grave catastrophes.

Pieces that withstand atmospheric ablation are known as meteorites, but the name of the spell in the series refers to the overall phenomenon.

This means that the use of the word "meteor" in spell names in Final Fantasy is incorrect, as parts that withstand the atmospheric entry are called meteorites.

Trivia

  • The Choco Meteor's meteorite in Final Fantasy Tactics is in the shape of a chocobo's head.
