Choco (チョコ, Choko?) is a chocobo in Final Fantasy IX and is used to play the Chocobo Hot and Cold minigame. Choco is first found in the Chocobo's Forest, where the moogle Mene teaches Zidane Tribal how to ride and call Choco with Gysahl Greens. Choco can be summoned on the world map by standing on chocobo footprints and using a Gysahl Green in the menu.

Choco initially starts off as a generic yellow chocobo, however, he will eventually find Chocographs that lead him to treasure chests, that will grant Choco new abilities and allow him to travel through varying types of terrain.

Etymology

Choco is short for "Chocobo". The name "chocobo" derives from a Japanese brand of chocolate malt ball by Morinaga, ChocoBall (チョコボール, Chokobōru?). The mascot for this product is Kyoro-chan (キョロちゃん?), a bird who says "kweh".

食う / くう / kuu is a rough way to say "eat", whose volitional casual form is 食え / くえ / kue ("let's scoff 'em down!"), leading to Kweh!

Trivia

  • During Disc 3, if, instead of going to Ipsen's Castle by airship, the player goes there by a flying Choco, upon leaving the dungeon, Choco will be replaced by the party's airship.
