The Chimera Sphinx, also known as the Maximus, is an enemy in Final Fantasy II. It uses two major attacks: its regular physical attack, and Bad Breath VI, which attempts to Petrify the entire party. Fortunately, Bad Breath has a low Accuracy rate, so the only thing to fear from this monster is its standard attack, which should not cause too much of a problem.

Etymology[]
The chimera is a fire-breathing monster, one of the offspring of Typhon and Echidna. It is commonly represented with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail in Greek mythology. In modern usage, the term chimera is often taken to mean any sort of hybrid between two or more species.
A sphinx is a mythical creature with the body of a lion and a human head. In Greek tradition it is a female with the haunches of a lion, sometimes with the wings of a great bird, and the face of a human, and is mythicised as treacherous and merciless; those who cannot answer her riddle are killed and eaten. Unlike the Greek sphinx, the Egyptian sphinx is typically shown as a man and viewed as benevolent. Both were thought of as a guardian often flanking entrances to temples.
