Chapter 1, also known as Betrayal? and He Wouldn't Betray Us,[note 1] is the first chapter in Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-. The chapter comprises the events after the prologue, as Zack Fair, a SOLDIER 2nd Class under Angeal Hewley's mentorship, travels to Wutai to help bring an end to the Wutai War. The boss of the chapter is Ifrit.
Story[]
Angeal and Zack leave a training simulation in the Shinra Building and head to SOLDIER director Lazard Deusericus's office. There, they that learn Angeal's childhood friend, Genesis Rhapsodos, has betrayed the Shinra Electric Power Company and deserted along with many other SOLDIER members. Lazard also orders Zack and Angeal to Fort Tamblin for the final battle of the Wutai War. Before their mission, Angeal informs Zack that he recommended him to be promoted to SOLDIER 1st Class.
While approaching the Wutai stronghold, Angeal tells Zack about his childhood in Banora Village. Angeal grew up poor in the village, known for its "dumbapples", apples exclusive to the region that ripen at random times of the year, and would feed himself off them, too proud to ask for handouts. He grew up with Genesis, the mayor's son and his best friend, and never stole from his family's tree even if it was the biggest in the village. Angeal separately explains his weapon, the Buster Sword, represents his family's honor, and thus he never uses it so as to avoid wearing it down.
At Fort Tamblin, the two split, Zack infiltrating the fortress alone. After battling his way through, he meets a young girl called Yuffie Kisaragi, who threatens him before running off. Zack is ambushed by two monsters, and after battling them, is saved by Angeal, using the Buster Sword. After Zack observes this, Angeal responds that Zack's life is "a little" more important than the sword.
Angeal goes back on his own, and after Zack is finished with his work, he goes looking for Angeal. On the way, Ifrit is suddenly summoned, and Zack battles it. Zack appears to defeat it, but it gets back up and overwhelms him when he lets his guard down. Sephiroth appears and saves Zack by defeating Ifrit. Zack and Sephiroth find several soldiers working under Genesis who have been transformed into copies of him thanks to stolen Shinra technology.
Unable to find Angeal, Sephiroth believes that Angeal has now deserted with Genesis. Zack and Sephiroth leave to return to headquarters.
