History[]

Before Dawntrail[]

Chalteaufite and Apyaahi from FFXIV

Chalteaufite and Apyaahi.

Chalteaufite was one of Apyaahi's guests who joined her villainous group, the Passage of the Unbound. Apyaahi revealed the existence of sacred artifacts around Tural. These artifacts contain the essence of fearsome beasts called Tural Vidraal, and said that with the power of the artifacts they could achieve their goal.[1] Following Apyaahi's instructions, Chalteaufite disguised himself as a merchant and infiltrated a village in the south of Yok Tural. Chalteaufite attracted the attention of the villagers by displaying exotic goods from foreign lands and serving them free drinks. Under cover of night, Chalteaufite stole the Steelhog Vessel and fled back to Ala Mhigo. Following the trail of an empty bottle Chalteaufite left behind, Ceetol Ja was able to follow him to Gyr Abania in an attempt to recover the treasure.[2]

Using the powers of the Steelhog Vessel, Chalteaufite deceived several poor citizens of Ul'dah and made promises of change. Chalteaufite gathered a group of subordinates and forced them to join him in attacks. The followers quickly became disillusioned, although their attempts to protest were met with threats and violence by Chalteaufite. At one point, Chalteaufite recruited a Mamool Ja mercenary called Kaqool Ja. Chalteaufite told Kaqool Ja that the cost of a ship back to Tural was enough to buy a mansion in Eorzea, and said that if the mercenary served him loyally, Chalteaufite would cover all the costs of his journey home.[3]

Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail[]

Chalteaufite's gang from FFXIV

Chalteaufite using the vessel's power to defeat the merchant's escort.

Using the vessel's power, Chalteaufite began attacking trade caravans coming from Gridania, claiming that the merchants were overworking and underpaying their workers and therefore deserved to be plundered.[4] As Chalteaufite's gang attacked a merchant and his escort, the Warrior of Light arrived to help the victims. Chalteaufite used the Steelhog Vessel's power on Kaqool Ja and ordered him to deal with the Warrior of Light. Just as Kaqool Ja drew his axe, Ceetol Ja arrived on the scene. Upon seeing a compatriot, Kaqool Ja refused to fight and put away his weapon. Ceetol Ja asked Chalteaufite to return the treasure, but he refused, saying that only he would know how to harness the Vessel's power. While Chalteaufite fled, Ceetol Ja took the wounded to Rhalgr's Reach.[2]

Chalteaufite and two of his henchmen disguised themselves as shopkeepers. They approached the Resistance commander in Porta Praetoria claiming to have heard the rumors of the attack and said they wanted to offer themselves as bait in a place where bandits usually attack. Arriving at the entrance to a ravine, the two disguised henchmen chose to stay behind while the Warrior of Light went ahead to investigate the crime scene. The Warrior of Light was attacked in ambush, but the bandits were easily defeated. Upon returning and reporting the ambush to the two merchants, they are surprised that the brigands have been defeated and contact Chalteaufite, who soon arrives at their location with the commander of Porta Praetoria and Ceetol Ja. While the member of the Resistance arrested the bandits, Chalteaufite said goodbye.[5]

After the interrogation, one of the culprits is released and the Warrior of Light and Ceetol Ja have followed him to their lair. Chalteaufite scolded the bandit for going straight to their lair with the possibility of being followed. While they were talking, Kaqool Ja discovered that Ceetol Ja and the Warrior of Light were listening in and confronted them. Chalteaufite used the power of the vessel on Kaqool Ja while he and the others escaped.[6]

Chalteaufite and Kaqool Ja from FFXIV

Kaqool Ja confronting Chalteaufite.

Chalteaufite made a speech to his subordinates saying that after looting the goods and spreading chaos in Ala Mhigo, he had invested the funds in restoring and upgrading discarded magitek weaponry. Now Chalteaufite could start the next part of his plan and take control of Ala Mhigo. The speech was interrupted by Kaqool Ja who had found out about Chalteaufite's lies and demanded that he hand over the Vessel. Chalteaufite declared that Kaqool Ja was a traitor and used the power of the Vessel on his subordinates to confront Kaqool Ja.[7]

The Warrior of Light, Ceetol Ja, and Kaqool Ja managed to reach the Royal Palace before Chalteaufite's gang had begun their invasion. Remembering that "Cracks form in even the most powerful shields", the Warrior of Light was able to break through the artifact barrier and defeat Chalteaufite. Ceetol Ja then recovered the Steelhog Vessel and used its power to knock out Chalteaufite. After the battle, Chalteaufite and his accomplices were arrested by the Resistance.[8]

Personality[]

Selfish, greedy and ambitious, Chalteaufite's only concern is claiming riches and power for himself, uncaring of the methods he has to use to acquire them. In addition, Chalteaufite is an opportunistic liar, deceiving his henchmen with what they want to hear but is more than willing to cast them aside once his lies have been exposed and are disillusioned with his cause.

Naturally arrogant and overconfident after stealing the Steelhog Vessel, Chalteaufite began a plan to take control of Ala Mhigo using the Vessel's power and partially restored magitek but as the Warrior of Light observed, Chalteaufite's forces were barely enough to break through the gates of the palace. Whatever confidence Chalteaufite had would be shattered like the vessel's shield after the Warrior thwarted his plans and was arrested by the Resistance.

Gameplay[]

Chalteaufite Cravenscreed is fought in the Special Instance during the Physical Ranged DPS role quest The Mightiest Shield The Mightiest Shield at level 100.
