The Centclip is a weapon for Red XIII in Final Fantasy VII. It is has eight unlinked Materia slots, making it among the few weapons to reach this number, but modest stats.
Like all Red XIII's weapons, Centclip is not rendered or visible in-game, and also cannot be thrown.
Obtained[]
The Centclip can be purchased for 14,000 gil from Costa del Sol after the player has the Highwind.
Mechanics[]
As the Centclip has a base Attack stat bonus of 58, the base damage for physical attacks when the Seraph Comb is equipped is in the following formula:
where "Level" is Red XIII's current level and "Strength" is his Strength stat. The Centclip also has an Attack% (Accuracy) of 108%, and grants a +22 bonus to Red XIII's Magic stat.
Use[]
The Centclip has a high Magic boost, a large number of Materia slots, but relatively low Attack compared to other weapons available for Red XIII at the time, such as the Seraph Comb and Crystal Comb. Nonetheless, its abundance of slots and its Magic boost make it worthy of consideration for Red XIII due to his own stats making him best suited as a mage for the party.
The Centclip's main strength lies in its eight Materia slots, meaning it is one of the few weapons in the game to have this many. However, these slots being unlinked is a major setback for Red XIII, as it prevents him from taking advantage of any Support Materia on the weapon itself. This makes it important to equip armor with paired slots, while Centclip's own slots can still be used for Independent Materia that improve his stats, or for Magic and Summon Materia that are less reliant on Support Materia to be optimal for casting spells.
The Centclip is available around the same time as the Crystal Comb, which is a more well-rounded weapon for Red XIII with better stats and only two fewer slots, though all of its slots are linked. This means whether the player uses Centclip depends on how important these linked slots are. After Centclip, the only other weapon to provide eight Materia slots for Red XIII is his ultimate weapon, the Limited Moon, for which all slots are linked, but it comes with zero Materia growth.
