Caterchipillar is a Triple Triad card in Final Fantasy VIII used to play the minigame and for turning into items with Quezacotl's Card Mod. Caterchipillar is the tenth card in the inventory, a basic Level 1 Monster Card.
Being a Level 1 card, the card values on the Caterchipillar are not strong, though it doesn't have any 1s. Its value placement may be useful for games that use Same and/or Plus.
Obtain[]
The Caterchipillar monster has a 3.5% chance to drop the card. Using the Card command on a Caterchipillar has a 93.7% chance to procure a Caterchipillar card when it succeeds. However, this can be tricky because low health Caterchipillars like to berserk the party.
Any AI Triple Triad player who uses Level 1 cards has a chance of using Caterchipillar in a play, from where the player can win it in a card match.
At the beginning of the game, right after Squall meets Selphie, the player can talk to a man outside the Balamb Garden elevator in the second floor who will gift a starter Triple Triad deck; Caterchipillar is part of the set.
Card Mod[]
A Caterchipillar card refines into a Spider Web with Quezacotl's Card Mod ability. It can be used to teach Quistis a new Blue Magic spell, Ultra Waves. It may also be worthwhile to collect the cards to make the Spider Webs they procure into Slow spells after the player learns Time Mag-RF ability on Diablos, however, the player can also fight the actual monster in the forests outside Balamb Garden from the start of the game.
Physical version[]
In 1999, following the release of Final Fantasy VIII in Japan, Bandai produced a full set of collectible Triple Triad cards in Final Fantasy VIII Carddass Masters Perfect Visuals. The set was made up of the 110 cards as seen in the game along with 72 artwork cards and a collector's edition playing mat. The cards have a blue side and a red side. The cards have become a rare collector's item.
