The earliest the Carbon Bangle can, and should, be obtained is at the Shinra Bld. before being captured. Fighting the Moth Slasher found on the 67th floor and stealing from them will enable the player to get the Carbon Bangle, which is the strongest armor until the player completes Corel Prison, which enables them access to Cait Sith and his Silver Armlet and later Cosmo Canyon to buy Silver Armlets. Stealing at least five is recommended.

Carbon Bangle will remain as the player's best armor option for a good deal of Part 1, providing the best Defense and Magic Defense, as well as the best Materia slots. While the Platinum Bangle gives Double materia growth, it offers one fewer Materia slot, and no slots are linked, in addition to 7 less Defense and 2 less Magic Defense. However, the player may opt for the Platinum Bangle for leveling up Materia if they do not mind the slightly lower defenses.
