Cagnazzo [kɑːnˈjɑːt.soʊ, kænˈjæt.soʊ] is a voidsent who serves as a character and boss in Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker. Formerly a Roegadyn from the Thirteenth reflection of the Source, he, like all denizens of the star, was consumed by the Flood of Darkness which rendered him into an aether-starved beast known as a voidsent. As a voidsent, he served Golbez as the archfiend of water.
History[]
Before Final Fantasy XIV[]
Passion in life[]
Before he was called Cagnazzo, he was a fisherman of modest means. Due to the ongoing aetherical imbalance caused by the raging war, the Contramemoria, fish had become less abundant and harder to obtain. Living with his brother, whom he shared a fishing business with, Cagnazzo became fed up with his boring, meagre life and decided on a whim to participate in the war. He quickly found two Memoriates fighting and intervened, defeating one of them with his bare fists. The other, thinking him an ally quickly approached him until the man who would be known as Cagnazzo began to attack him too. Sometime later, he was found by his brother among the bodies of the two defeated Memoriates. Claiming he never felt so alive, he decided to dedicate his life in earnest to battle, walking away and leaving his brother in the dust. Never again would he see his younger brother's face, too hungry for the thrill of combat.
His brother would later hear of a mighty warrior who would intervene in conflicts with his bare fists, defeat everyone and walk away. People took him for a feral hound, and named him Cagnazzo, a name he would carry until swallowed by the Flood.[1]
Drowned king[]
After the Flood of Darkness, Cagnazzo established a Domain, using his control over water to trap and drown voidsent without any challenge and building his power through this. He, however, never satiated his hunger. It was only until he met Golbez, who gifted him a portion of his massive aether reserves, feeling full for a moment, that he remembered that his hunger wasn't for aether, but for the thrill of battle. Due to this he began to serve Golbez willingly, in order to fight even greater foes and once more fill that hole in his life.[1]
While in the service of Golbez, Cagnazzo was offered a fragment of the aether of the captured great wyrm Azdaja, which transformed him into the archfiend of water.
Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker[]
Cagnazzo met with his fellow Archfiends and Golbez to discuss intruders in the void. Compared to his fellow voidsent, Cagnazzo seemed especially eager to kill these intruders. He was in disbelief that a memoriate survived the Contramemoria War, though was forced to accept this after two Archfiends were slain. He conspired with Rubicante to stop the Warrior of Light from intruding into the void. Using one of Azdaja's eyes, he lured the Warrior and their party away from Radz-at-Han, where he confronted them in Lapis Manalis. After being mortally wounded, he revealed the ploy to the party before fading away. Later, Cagnazzo's actions were revealed to be a diversion that allowed Rubicante to destroy the portal to the void in Alzaadal's Vault.
Characteristics[]
Appearance[]
Before the flood of Darkness, Cagnazzo was a bulky male Roegadyn standing at around 90.7 ilms, with a bald head and cream-colored eyes. As a rough-and-tumble fisherman, Cagnazzo wore a storm blue Twinsilk Robe of Aiming, with russet brown Aesthete's Trousers of Gathering, and Ivalician Archer's Boots.
As a voidsent, before absorbing aether from the great wyrm Azdaja, Cagnazzo was a stocky bipedal creature with large claws, a tail, a multitude of horns and spiky protrusions over his body, with glowing ember eyes.
After gorging on Azdaja's aether, Cagnazzo became a large, blue, bipedal creature with long yellow claws and a shell-like protrusion on his back. His skin appeared reptile or amphibian-like and he sported a tail partially covered in scales. Cagnazzo's overall appearance bears the resemblance to a tortoise.
Personality[]
Cagnazzo seeks the thrill of battle and strong opponents that will make him fight to the fullest. Before becoming a voidsent, he lost his contentment with his lot in life of a fisherman when the Contramemoria grew more heated, participating in the raging war to seek thrills, never truly feeling alive until pushed to the brink. Cagnazzo never cared for causes or factions to fight for, even when one Memoriate of Darkness offered him riches for fighting for him, as he would appear randomly in any battle he found and would attack indiscriminately for nothing but the thrill of the fight. He was cursed as a "feral dog" by those who knew of him.
In spite of eventually abandoning him to sate his battle lust, his brother would still characterize him as good and kind towards him, always willing to lend him a hand with fishing before the war took a turn for the worse.
After becoming a voidsent, Cagnazzo initially built his power by trapping and drowning enemies so that he could consume them. He never felt satisfied until Golbez showed him what he missed was the thrill of battle. Cagnazzo appears to desire a worthy opponent that will push his limits and may even defeat him, feeling dissatisfied whenever a foe fails to give him a challenge. He gladly gives his life to serve Golbez's ends, and after being beaten by the Warrior of Light, he finds himself at peace with his death, without regrets and happy to finally return to the Lifestream. He only found it a "pity" that he would not be able to see Rubicante's plan to completion or Golbez's goals fulfilled.
Abilities[]
As a Roegadyn, Cagnazzo was a capable, yet untrained, fighter, strong enough to beat Memoriates with his bare hands.
As a voidsent, Cagnazzo can devour free-floating aether as well as control and summon water. While summoning water, he falls on all fours and can retreat into his shell to propel himself through water.
Gameplay[]
Cagnazzo serves as the final boss of the Lapis Manalis duty. In battle he will slowly summon water that will coalesce into explosive water orbs, and will use his signature ability Tsunami after using Floatsam Flotsam spears to empower him. He will also retreat into his shell to use Hydraulic Ram to move around the arena and ram into players while also shooting water at them.
Musical themes[]
When encountered within Lapis Manalis, the theme "Battle 2 (Endwalker)" will play.
Behind the scenes[]
Cagnazzo is based on Cagnazzo from Final Fantasy IV, being the archfiend of water serving under Golbez.
