The Cactuar is an enemy in Final Fantasy X-2. The Cactuar is fought in Bikanel in Chapter 5. Two also fight alongside the Jumbo Cactuar. It uses the Qactuar, Cactuar, and Cactuar King's model from Final Fantasy X.

Story[]

The leader of the cacti and Cactuars is an ancient cactus named Marnela (meaning "Grandmother" in the Cactuar language), who has a special bond with a young Al Bhed boy named Benzo, the only person able to understand their language. The Cactuars in this area appear as realistic cacti. The cactus stage is how Cactuars appear when they are born, but later in their lives, they uproot themselves and become Cactuars. When they reach a certain level of maturity, they root themselves again, becoming cacti once more. It was believed a millennium ago that some Cactuars left Bikanel and migrated to the Thunder Plains, becoming the Qactuar.

Battle[]

Cactuar has high stats all around, especially in the Magic Defense department. Because Cactuar's Evasion is so high, a Dark Knight's Darkness ability is recommended over basic physical attacks. Lady Luck's Two Dice and Four Dice will also do the job.

Cactuars in the Fiend Arena are much more dangerous than their counterparts in Bikanel and Via Infinito. They can use strong abilities like Fireworks or Meteor and repeatedly put themselves in Haste. At low HP they will occasionally use 10000 Needles and subsequently heal themselves with White Highwind.

Creature Creator[]

Once the player has discovered the Cactuar Hollow in Chapter 5, they can recruit a Cactuar into the party by setting up a Trap pod S in Bikanel. The Cactuar comes into the party having learned 1000 Needles and Ailment Def. (provides immunity against all status ailments).

Regardless of its level, the Cactuar has the extremely high Magic Defense stat of 255 (assuming accessories or dresspheres that reduce Magic Defense are not equipped). Even at the lowest levels, many magic attacks will barely make a dent on it. Its Magic and Accuracy stats are decent, while its Strength, Defense, Evasion, and Luck are below average. It is the slowest-growing creature, requiring 1,645,189 EXP to reach Level 99. This is also a blessing in disguise, as even if YRP is at Level 99, the Cactuar will come into the party at Level 90, which makes it still eligible for leveling up four times for Fiend Tale completion without having to do the Farplane Cup. By comparison, the Recoil and Flak Python require only 761,597 EXP to reach Level 99, while Elma requires 1,255,243 EXP, although she does not have a fiend tale due to being part of the game's storyline.

Fiend Arena[]

Cactuars appear first in the Grand Cup: Hard. A duo is always the last team the player faces when completing the cup for the fourth time. Defeating them unlocks the Cactuar Cup in which every team includes at least one Cactuar. The player must have a Cactuar in their active battling party to enter it. Cactuars can be recruited by setting up an Trap pod S in Bikanel after unlocking the Cactuar Hollow. The Jumbo Cactuar is ineligible for entry even though it is classified as a member of the Cactuar species; this is most likely due to it being an L-sized creature, which would prevent a regular Cactuar from being in the party.

Etymology[]

Sabotender (サボテンダー, Sabotendā?) is derived from mixing the Japanese word for cactus (サボテン, saboten?) and the English word "pretender" (プリテンダー, puritendā?).
