Gameplay[]

Cúchulainn's job is Impure King (PS)/The Impure (WotL). Final Fantasy Record Keeper[]

FFRK Cuchulainn FFT

Cúchulainn is fought as a boss in the Lionel Castle - Oratory dungeon and its Elite version, in the Final Fantasy Tactics Realm Dungeons. He is also the boss of the Tyranny of the Impure Torment Dungeon, representing Final Fantasy Tactics. He also will occasionally appear as a boss fight in Final Fantasy Tactics Events.

In all appearances, Cúchulainn focuses on Dark and Poison-element damage, as well as a variety of status ailments, based on his appearance in Final Fantasy Tactics. In the Realm dungeon, he can inflict Sleep and Doom with Nightmare, Slow with Auge, Stop with Foulheart, Poison with Bio, Petrify with Biora, and Instant Death with Bioga.

In the Torment dungeon, Nightmare does not inflict Sleep, and all versions of Bio spells inflict poison. But each one will always inflict its respective status ailment. Additionally, after a target has Doom inflicted, Unholy Darkness will remove several seconds from the target's timer. Like all Torment bosses, Cúchulainn will use Incubus Dead End to end the fight if it takes too long.

As with many Final Fantasy Tactics enemies in Final Fantasy Record Keeper, Cúchulainn will occasionally speak before attacking, as a Realm Dungeon or Event boss. These quotes are based on the ones used in Final Fantasy Tactics, but use a translation that has not been previously used in any version of Final Fantasy Tactics, as Final Fantasy Tactics: The War Of The Lions did not feature attack quotes. Each of Cúchulainn's Dread and Befoul abilities are given an attack quote.

  • Bio: "Devour sweet flesh that brims with life, that sacred chalice fill with blight."
  • Biora: "All life by laws divine abides, not even Death may dare defy."
  • Bioga: "Life great and small by sin survives, cleanse now these mortals of their vice."
  • Nightmare: "In darkness sleeps our gravebound fears, in darkness cloaked it wakes and stalks."
  • Foulheart: "In mortal fear your heart beats swift, now chains of iron bind you fast."
  • Auge: "Dark lord trapped 'twixt heaven and hell, close by my side your minions keep."

Etymology[]

Cúchulainn is an Irish mythological hero who appears in the stories of the Ulster Cycle, as well as in Scottish and Manx folklore. "Cú" is the Irish word for hound—"Cúchulainn" is literally "Hound of Chulainn". "Cúchulainn" is technically mispronounced in the series, being closer to "coo-hullen" as audible in the following reading from Irish myths by Ronnie Drew via youtube.

The son of the god Lugh and Deichtine, sister of the king of Ulster, he was originally named Sétanta, but gained his better-known name as a child after he killed Chulainn's fierce guard-dog in self-defense, and offered to take its place until a replacement could be reared. At the age of seventeen he defended Ulster single-handedly against the armies of queen Medb of Connacht in the epic Táin Bó Cúailnge.

It was prophesied that his great deeds would give him everlasting fame, but that his life would be short—one reason he is compared to the Greek hero Achilles. He is known for his terrifying battle frenzy or "warp spasm", in which he becomes an unrecognizable monster who knows neither friend nor foe. He fights from his chariot, driven by his loyal charioteer Láeg, and drawn by his horses, Liath Macha and Dub Sainglend.
