Burst (バースト, Bāsuto?), also known as Surge, is a recurring ability in Final Fantasy series. The ability normally serves as the strongest form of Thunder magic, inflicting major lightning-elemental damage.
Since its appearance in the Dissidia entries in the series, Burst has often appeared as a signature ability for Shantotto in several spin-off titles.

Burst is a Lightning-elemental Black Magic spell available only to a Black Mage at or after level 56. When cast, Burst inflicts instantaneous Lightning-elemental damage and reduces the target's resistance to Earth magic. As one of the Ancient Magic spells, it has one of the highest casting times and MP costs. It has a cast time of 18.5 seconds, and may be recast every 44 seconds for 352 MP.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII[]
Surge is a lightning-attribute magic ability, serving as the ultimate spell for the element. It deals heavy lightning-elemental magic damage to all foes, with its potency becoming increased with the less HP Lightning has. The player can find Surge Lv. 1 in a treasure sphere at the Altar of Atonement, one of the four Trials in God's Sanctum. Surge Lv. 3 is also the locked ability on the Astral Lord garb.
Final Fantasy XIV[]
Burst is a PvP-exclusive ability available to Black Mages. It deals heavy lightning damage to its target and nearby enemies, while also creating a barrier around the caster that absorbs damage dealt.
Burst was originally a lightning-elemental Black Mage spell in the original 1.0 version of the game, being obtained by completing the Black Mage quest line. It had a very high cooldown timer, but dealt high damage that can be increased by using it in a combo after Thundara, making it deal more damage based on the user's current HP. Black Mages usually used it after depleting their MP and using conversion to maximize damage.

Burst is a unique attack available to Ace in combat. It involves Ace drawing a majority of red cards to deal direct damage to the enemies.
Dissidia Final Fantasy[]
Burst is a form of Shantotto's Spirit Magic: Lightning. Cast when Shantotto has 6,000 or more Bravery, it summons a large lightning bolt to strike enemies.
