Evade an attack. ATB increases when successful. Can use while airborne.
Description
Brumal Form is an ATB ability for Yuffie in "Episode INTERmission" in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, provided to her by the Boomerang. It is an evasion maneuver that causes Yuffie to disappear in a puff of smoke and side step several meters, leaving behind a moogle image as she does. It can be used while airborne. If Yuffie successfully dodges an attack, she regains half of an ATB segment, making the actual ATB-cost of using it small, and allows it to be used consecutively, such as against enemy attacks that have multiple phases/projectiles.
The ability is reminiscent of Cloud's Counterstance from the main game, but with a shorter "stance" duration. It is also reminiscent of Tifa's Focused Strike, as a quickly usable ability that restores ATB.
Obtained[]
Brumal Form is provided by the Boomerang, a weapon found in the Sector 7 Clinic during "Wutai's Finest". It can be permanently learned by using the ability with the Boomerang equipped in a way that dodges an attack.
Use[]
Brumal Form should be equipped to the player's shortcuts, and can be an invaluable move when perfected, and one of Yuffie's most useful abilities. Against enemies that telegraph their attacks, players can reliably avoid powerful projectiles or melee attacks before they hit Yuffie, regaining ATB in the process. The ability plays well with Yuffie's agility, especially as she can use Throw to be dealing damage from range while dodging with Brumal Form (as Yuffie cannot guard or precision-guard without holding her weapon). The ability has a fairly generous window to using it; it needs to be pulled off right before the enemy's attack hits, but is not as precise as perfect guard. Brumal Form makes battles flow faster, as the player can play more aggressively as they can substitute guard and dodge maneuvers.
Though using Brumal Form costs ATB whereas normal dodge doesn't, Brumal Form is much more potent, and can be used while airborne as well. Successfully avoiding an attack with it also refunds half its ATB cost. Combined with ATB Assist Materia, it allows Yuffie to also generate ATB for Sonon.
One particularly effective use of Brumal Form is with Banishment. As Banishment deals more damage when it is charged up by using ATB moves, using Brumal Form to perform multiple evasions in quick succession, refueling ATB in-between for other ATB abilities to be used to charge a powerful Banishment move in retaliation (though Brumal Form itself does not charge Banishment). Brumal Form can be used to avoid otherwise devastating attacks, like Bahamut's Divebomb.
Behind the scenes[]
Final Fantasy XV also allows the player to distract enemies with a moogle doll decoy.
Etymology[]
Brumal means "winterlike".
"Kumogakure", the technique's Japanese name, means "hiding in the clouds" and may be an allusion to the legendary Sengoku era Iga ninja and leader of the Sanada Ten Braves, Kirigakure Saizō, who—true to his name—was said to be able to hide in mist.
