Briareus is not very powerful, but it has a 33% chance of countering any attack with Snort, removing a party member from the battle. Locke can steal valuable Gaia Gears from them, which are one of the best pieces of equipment in the World of Balance.
If the player visits Thamasa immediately after acquiring the Blackjack, they can acquire several suits of Gaia Gear long before they can be bought, giving the player a significant boost in defensive power. Gaia Gear can prove especially helpful in the Cave to the Sealed Gate, which immediately follows the player's acquisition of the airship.
