Template:Sideicon Brian Lockhart was a resident of Nibelheim prior to the events of Final Fantasy VII. He is Tifa's father, and his death led Tifa to join AVALANCHE to fight against Shinra and SOLDIER. Brian only appears in flashbacks in Final Fantasy VII, and also appears in Last Order -Final Fantasy VII-. In Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-, he is mentioned in a email from Cloud to Zack sent during the Nibelheim Incident.
He has never been named in-game. In the Japanese version of Final Fantasy VII he has the speaker name Tifapapa (ティファパパ, Tifapapa?). His original concept art labeled him as "Brian Lockhart", and he was eventually referred to by this name in the Final Fantasy VII Remake Ultimania.[1]
Story
Tifa's mother died when she was eight years old, and since then she lived with just with her father. Grief-stricken at having lost her mother, Tifa wanted to climb Mt. Nibel, somehow believing she could find her. A boy living in Nibelheim, Cloud Strife, followed under concern for her safety, and both fell from a rickety bridge and Tifa got badly injured. Brian came to take her back to town, and blamed Cloud for the expedition, forbidding Tifa from seeing him again.
Seen in Last Order -Final Fantasy VII-, Tifa runs through a burning Nibelheim shouting out to her father when she sees her master, Zangan, who tells her Sephiroth set fire to the town and killed the townspeople. Tifa asks for her father and Zangan replies he has gone to Mt. Nibel. She arrives at the Nibel Reactor and finds her father lying injured on the floor with Sephiroth's Masamune close by covered in blood.
Tifa tells him to hang on, cradling him in her arms. He tells her to run away and dies before her eyes. Tifa declares her hatred for Shinra, SOLDIER, mako, and Sephiroth. She runs into the reactor to confront Sephiroth with the Masamune, but is easily disarmed and cast aside.
Behind the scenes
Tifa's father is known as Tifapapa (ティファパパ, Tifapapa?) in the Japanese version of Final Fantasy VII, with the first part of his name changing based on what the player names Tifa. This name only features as his speaker name, and may be indicative of Cloud's perspective. In English he has no speaker name. His Final Fantasy Ultimania Archive profile is titled "Tifa's Dad"[2], and the Final Fantasy VII Remake Deluxe Edition Artbook captioned his artwork "Tifa's Father"[3].
The name "Brian Lockhart" (ブライアン・ロックハート, Buraian Rokkuhāto?) was first used to officially refer to him in the Final Fantasy VII Remake Ultimania[1]. This name was first used in Tetsuya Nomura's concept art for the original game but was not used in the game.
Tifa calls her father Papa (パパ, Papa?) in Final Fantasy VII, while the maturer Tifa interpretation in Last Order calls him (父さん, Tōsan?) and refers to him as chichi (父?) to others.[4]
His concept art by Tetsuya Nomura mentions him to be 40 years old.
