Cause Petrify

Description

Break is an indirect magic spell in Final Fantasy VIII. The spell inflicts the Petrify status effect and can be junctioned to inflict or resist against Petrify.

When Magic Booster is used in the 2013 PC re-release, the player's inventory gains 100 Break spells, among other basic spells.

Obtained

Break can be drawn from a variety of enemies, and is easier to obtain at medium levels when the party is over level 20. It can be most easily refined from Cockatrice Pinions using the Guardian Force Diablos' ability ST Mag-RF. Cockatrices are therefore a good source of Breaks, as Cockatrice Pinions can be obtained by them and Breaks can be drawn from them over level 20. The player can also get Cockatrice Pinions from their cards.

The Black Shadow at Obel Lake may tell the player to "Take a break at the railroad bridge". This points to the bridge in the Dingo Desert area of which both a road and a railway line travel across. On a nearby cliff, which only the Ragnarok can reach, there is an invisible draw point containing exactly one Break spell.

Stats

Use

Break when cast will inflict the Petrify status effect on a target that is not immune to it. This turns the target into a gray stone and immobilizes them, while rendering damage and healing ineffective against them. This flags the unit as defeated. When an enemy is petrified in battle, the player earns EXP based on the HP damage done prior to petrification.

Break can be cast using the Magic command, Selphie's Slot Limit Break, or Rinoa's Angel Wing if she has it in her inventory. Casting Break in battle increases compatibility with Doomtrain by 1 and with Siren by 0.6, but lowers compatibility with Cerberus and Carbuncle by 0.2.

Break can be junctioned to ST-Atk-J to inflict Petrify on enemies with a physical attack. This effectively gives a chance to kill an enemy, though even when 100 Breaks are junctioned to ST-Atk-J, it is still chance based, meaning the player may choose to junction other immobilizing status effects such as Sleep, Blind, or Stop.

Break is better junctioned to ST-Def-J to resist against Petrify, as 100 Breaks leads to immunity. This can be important against enemies that can inflict Break, as it can be a very harmful status effect.

Blue Dragon and Chimera use Break against the player. It can be reflected.
