Inflicts petrification on the target.
Description
Break is an Attack spell in Final Fantasy VI. It inflicts the Petrify status effect, which succeeds if the target is not immune to instant death or to petrify. Break is learned naturally by Terra at level 68, and can later be earned by other party members through magicite.
Break is also an enemy ability used by Shambling Corpse, Level 20 Magic, and Level 40 Magic.
Break is an added ability to the Stoneblade.
Obtained[]
Terra learns Break naturally upon reaching level 68, although she will likely learn it from magicite much earlier. It is taught by Catoblepas at a rate of x5.
Use[]
Break will attempt to inflict petrify on a target, effectively killing them. Its hit rate and high MP cost mean that it is risky to cast as opposed to simply damaging spells to defeat them with damage, but against enemies vulnerable, it can be effective. Break is immensely useful on the Floating Continent and the opening sections of the World Ruin, due to many enemies being susceptible to the spell.
Break has effectively the same purpose as casting Death, which attempts to kill a target instantly. Death has a higher MP cost and lower hit rate, but some enemies may have immunity to petrify but not death. It also has effectively the same purpose as Banish, which has a yet higher MP cost and lower hit rate, but ignores death immunity (but many enemies also have Banish immunity) and works on undead.
Although Break is an Attack spell, it is unaffected by the Magic stat of the caster. As such, it can be taught to any party member and will have the same impact. Because the player will not use Break frequently, it is a luxury spell on all party members, who should prioritize learning other spells first.
Break is often better when used by the Stoneblade, which does not waste MP when it does not connect.
