Brand of Purgatory is a Summoner spell from Final Fantasy XIV that deals damage in an area of effect. It can only be used during Firebird Trance.

Use

Brand of Purgatory deals heavy damage to its target and splash damage to nearby enemies. While it suffers from a 50% potency dropoff after the first hit, its naturally high potency means it is still one of the most potent area of effect (AoE) actions in the Summoner's arsenal. This makes it a versatile option the Summoner will want to use regardless how many enemies they are facing. However, Brand of Purgatory can only be used under the Hellish Conduit status granted by Fountain of Fire, and consumes it in the process. As such, Summoners will generally want to alternate between casting Fountain of Fire and Brand of Purgatory during Firebird Trance.

Brand of Purgatory notably has an 8-yalm radius rather than the 5-yalm radius common to AoE abilities. This can allow it to be used effectively in situations 5-yalm AoEs cannot, such as the Arcane Sphere phase in Eden's Gate: Resurrection (Savage). In this example the Arcane Spheres are too far apart for 5-yalm radius AoEs to be effective, but Brand of Purgatory's 8-yalm radius allows it to hit all of the Spheres when used on Eden Prime.

As an instant cast spell that activates the global cooldown (GCD), Brand of Purgatory can be used to weave abilities that are off the global cooldown in between spell casts, such as Tri-disaster.

PvP

Brand of Purgatory still replaces Outburst during Firebird Trance in PvP. It no longer requires Hellish Conduit to use, but is comparatively weaker, and as such only suited to AoE encounters.
