Battle[]
The fight against the Brain Pod is divided in two phases. During the first phase, it'll remain stationary, and will always start by using Noxious Whirl, which lays a carpet of waste on the ground, inflicting Poison on a character who steps on it. The Brain Pod will also use Toxic Waste, a long range attack that also inflicts poison.
After losing half of its HP, the Brain Pod will use Flashbang to paralyze the entire party, and then multiplies into twelve Brain Pods. Barret and Cloud will be stunned as the Brain Pod creates clones of itself to surround them, all using Noxious Whirl, covering the entire battlefield. During this second phase, its arsenal of abilities will expand, and each pod will use the same abilities and attack pattern as the original boss. Bash and Lid Spin are used on targets that are on melee range, with the former knocking down characters that are not blocking. Life Syphon will deal continuous damage while draining health from its target. It will also use Stop, which afflicts the entire party, regardless of distance. Lastly, the pods can project their faces between each other, dealing damage on contact.
Red XIII will accompany Cloud and Barret as an uncontrollable guest, and occasionally uses Stardust Ray.
The Brain Pod and its copies are weak to Lightning.
Hard Mode[]
On the hard difficulty, during the second phase, the Brain Pod and its copies will be more aggressive, using Life Siphon and Stop more often, as well as coordinating Lid Spin attacks in succession to pressure the player.
Strategy[]
During the first phase, the Brain Pod does not pose a threat apart from its poison. Barret should build ATB and use Lifesaver as soon as possible, while Cloud can use Punisher Mode and relentlessly attack the boss. After the Brain Pod multiplies, the player should use area-of-effect ground attacks, such as Cloud's Triple Slash and Blade Burst, and Barret's Smackdown, to quickly dispose of the clones, then focus on the original boss.
It is best to avoid touching the poison pools from Noxious Whirl and projectiles from Toxic Waste, albeit this can be difficult given the tight space of the battlefield. Barret can reach with his normal attacks from further afield if he is equipped with a ranged weapon, and Cloud can use lightning magic. It is best to conserve MP for the second half of the battle where the boss will multiply itself. Lightning Materia paired with Magnify Materia works well for the second phase against 12 Brain Pods. Barret can be equipped with the Synergy Materia paired with Lightning to follow up Cloud's abilities with thunder to pelt the pods, or vice versa.
Equipping Warding Materia paired with Time Materia prevents Stop, and the player can bring Chakra Materia or Cleansing Materia to get rid of poison, or use Regen keep the characters from being sapped too fast.
