Battle[]

Part I[]

The enemy is found roaming outside of Arbor and inside the Ice Caverns. The enemy can be a challenge when first encountered; due to the fact the player only has Brandt in their party and its Whirl Bludgeon ability can deal heavy damage. To defeat the enemy quickly, the player should do a mixture of healing with Cure and attacking with black magic. Once the player gets Jusqua back into their party, the Borgbear can be easily defeated.

Part II[]

During the events of Part II the Borgbear can only be found inside the Mysterious Lighthouse bonus dungeon. The Borgbear can be a tough enemy to defeat, due to the fact the enemy has high strength and can deal heavy damage to all party members with Whirl Bludgeon. When fighting the Borgbear, it is highly advised of the player to have high level armor and to have three party members attack with light-elemental physical attacks and Thundaga, while the fourth member is casting Curaga to help the party survive.

Etymology[]

A bugbear is a legendary creature or type of hobgoblin comparable to the bogeyman and other creatures of folklore historically used to frighten disobedient children. The name is derived from a Middle English word bugge (a frightening thing), or perhaps the old Welsh word bwg (evil spirit or goblin), or old Scots bogill (goblin). In medieval England, the bugbear was depicted as a creepy bear that lurked in the woods to scare children. In a modern context, the term serves as a metaphor for something annoying often with a connotation that the loathing it inspires is disproportionate to its importance.
