Description

Blk Magic (黒魔法, Kuro Mahō?, lit. Black Magic) is one of the four main commands in Final Fantasy X. Its abilities are designed to damage opponents, but unlike abilities in the Skill command, they inflict damage magically instead of physically. Blk Magic abilities cost MP except Osmose, which gains MP.

Mechanics

Most Blk Magic abilities are found in Lulu's section of the Sphere Grid, with only three exceptions. The two Blk Magic abilities found on Wakka's section, Drain and Osmose, drain stats from the target. The ultimate Blk Magic, Ultima, is found on Kimahri's section of the Sphere Grid. Most Blk Magic abilities are Rank 3 abilities, but the abilities in Wakka's section are Rank 2, while the two non-elemental spells are of considerably higher Ranks.

The Blk Magic command is special among the other four core commands in that the abilities Lulu has learned on the Sphere Grid control the abilities she can use during her Overdrive, Fury. Blk Mag abilities can be Doublecast, unlike their Wht Mag counterparts. Blk Mag Spheres can be used to access activated Blk Magic nodes on the Sphere Grid from anywhere on the grid.

The formula for determining how much damage a Magic spell will do is as follows:

Damage = Spell Power * ((Magic ^ 2 / 6) + Spell Power) / 4

Etymology

[view · edit · purge]Black magic has traditionally referred to the use of supernatural powers or magic for evil and selfish purposes. With respect to the philosophy of left-hand path and right-hand path, black magic is the malicious counterpart of benevolent white magic.
