Blizzaga is a magic spell in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It is granted by either Ice Materia Ice Materia or Fire and Ice Materia Fire and Ice Materia, and is the highest-tier Fire Fire-elemental spell above Blizzard Blizzard and Blizzara Blizzara. Blizzaga deals great ice-elemental damage, with a high MP cost and long casting time, and costs two ATB charges. The spell when cast fires a small ice projectile at the targeted enemy, which then expands and explodes with a short delay to deal damage.

Blizzaga is also used by Hecteyes and Shankhalopod against the player.

Use[]

Blizzaga costs 21 MP to cast with a level 3 ice or fire and ice materia equipped. The spell is effective generally at damage output, but its prohibitive MP cost and ATB charge use means it should be used seldomly, and should ideally be used only against enemies weak to ice (particularly biological enemies) unless no other spellcasting option of its caliber is available.

Among its peers—Firaga Firaga, Thundaga Thundaga, and Aeroga Aeroga—Blizzaga functions differently in its projectile. Against enemies that are not immune to ice, Blizzaga can interrupt them, knock them down, and then launch them. In situations against enemies that cannot be interrupted, the spell should only be used when an enemy is not moving, either in between movements or when they are immobilized (such as by staggering them).

Using Support Materia Support Materia can alleviate some of Blizzaga's shortcomings and make it safer to regularly cast. Swiftcast Materia Swiftcast Materia in particular can mostly eliminate its long cast time, while Magic Efficiency Materia Magic Efficiency Materia reduces its prohibitive MP cost. HP Absorption Materia HP Absorption Materia and MP Absorption Materia MP Absorption Materia are also effective pairings to improve a party member's sustainability, Magic Focus Materia Magic Focus Materia can increase its damage even further, and Magnify Materia Magnify Materia can be a powerful way to hit multiple enemies at once with immense damage. ATB Boost Materia ATB Boost Materia can let the caster quickly top up to two ATB charges when they need to use the spell.

Players may wish to bolster Blizzaga with two support materia at once. This can be done by equipping two ice materia (or one ice and one fire and ice materia) and pairing each up with a support materia. Swiftcast for example is effective when used alongside magnify or HP absorption, as is magic efficiency alongside MP absorption.

Using Blizzaga with Aerith's Arcane Ward will cast it twice. Further using Yuffie with Doppelganger when in Arcane Ward can cast Blizzaga four times, potentially overwhelming enemies.

If the party member casting Blizzaga has unlocked their ice-elemental weapon ability (e.g. Cold Front for Aerith), Blizzaga becomes Blizzaga α, which will bestow an ice-elemental sphere to the spellcaster for the rest of the battle (unless the player changes the element with Firaga α etc.) that will supplement small magical ice-elemental damage when defending against certain enemy attacks (perfect-blocking not needed) and when using ATB abilities. The attacks from the "ice sphere" do build stagger and can be critical hits.
