Blizzaga is a magic ability for Lightning in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. It is the final Blizzard spell available to players, dealing heavy magic ice-elemental damage to mutliple foes in a large radius.

The Purple Lightning garb has a physical oriented version of Blizzaga known as Flood.

Obtained[]

A Blizzaga Lv. 2 ability can be found in a treasure sphere within the Temple of the Goddess in the Wildlands.

The Violet Twilight garb purchasable from Yusnaan's Hawker's Row on Hard Mode has Blizzaga Lv. 5 as its locked ability.

Blizzaga can be obtained as a drop from Chocobo Eaters with a 22.5% chance and Sugrivas with a 15% chance.

Due to the small pool of enemies that drop the ability late in the game, obtaining multiple Blizzagas can be challenging on a first playthrough without preparation. The best method to obtain multiple copies of the spell would be from Chocobo Eaters, due to Sugrivas only appearing on the Final Day and having a low requirements to reach extinction. When farming Chocobo Eaters, players should have multiple Aerora spells to stagger the foes to make them easier to defeat, and should also equip the Beggar's Beads accessory to increase the ability's chance of dropping.

The enemies drop different levels of the ability on the following days and difficulties:

Enemy Lv. 1 Lv. 2 Lv. 3 Lv. 4 Lv. 5
Chocobo Eater Day 1 - 6 (Easy/Normal) Day 10 -13 (Easy/Normal) Day 1 - 6 (Hard) Day 7 - 12 (Hard) Day 13 (Hard)
Sugriva Day 13/14 (Easy/Normal) - - Day 13/14 (Hard) -

Mechanics[]

When used, Lightning launches a bullet of ice at the target, causing a massive ice crystal to emerge upon impact, dealing heavy ice-elemental magic damage to the enemy and others surrounding it. If the opponent is susceptible to ice-elemental attacks, or is inflicted with the Curse and Imperil statuses, they will be launched into the air.

By default, Blizzaga Lv. 1 has an ATB cost of 40, an attack power of 1.65, a Stagger Power of A, and a Stagger Time of E. When fully upgraded, Blizzaga Lv. 5 at max has an ATB cost of 25, an attack power of 10.25, a Stagger Power of A, and a Stagger Time of E.

The Aeronite, Caius Ballad, Ereshkigal, Meonekton Ω, Snow Villiers++, Gremlin Ω enemies use Blizzaga against Lightning. It is also used by the final boss and its upgraded form during the second phase when under the effects of the Ice Spirit.

Use[]

Blizzaga is useful when battling multiple foes weak to ice-elemental attacks, allowing Lightning to inflict heavy damage to those caught in the attack and launching them into the air.

Blizzaga is exceptionally useful when battling stronger opponents like the Reavers and Dreadnoughts, especially when under the effects of Curse and Imperil, allowing Lightning to easily build up their stagger wave and launching them into the air to prevent them from acting. This tactic is especially useful when battling the boss of the Wildlands main scenario, especially when combined with Thundaga and Firaga, giving them little opportunity to perform attacks against Lightning.

The only downsides to casting Blizzaga are its heavy ATB cost and its cast animation making Lightning vulnerable to being attacked before the spell activates. However, some of those drawbacks can be eased with ability synthesis to lower the ATB cost, along with garbs and accessories that increase Lightning's ATB gauge and recovery.
