Deals ice damage.
Description
Blizzaga, also known as Ice3, is a Black Magic spell in Final Fantasy V. It is the highest-level ice-elemental spell, acquired later in the game. The spell can be used to hit one target or an entire party. Blizzaga is usable by the Black Magic skillset, can be used twice with Dualcast and Black Magic equipped, and can also be used as a Spellblade. Blizzaga is also one of the spells that can be cast for free from the Wonder Wand.
Blizzaga is also an enemy ability that can be cast by Barrier, Enuo, Exdeath in the first battle, Flaremancer, Fury, Melusine, Necrophobe, Neo Exdeath, Nereid, and Omniscient.
Obtained[]
Blizzaga can be purchased for 6000 gil at Moore.
Blizzaga can also be used by catching and releasing a Dark Elemental (#234), or by breaking a Frost Rod.
Mechanics[]
As a spell, Blizzaga's damage is calculated as follows:
If the target absorbs ice, it is healed instead of damaged; if it is immune to ice, the attack misses. If the target resists ice, the Attack modifier in the formula is halved, but if it is weak to ice, the modifier is doubled and the attack ignores the target's Magic Defense. Blizzaga is affected by reflect.
Several pieces of equipment increase the power of elemental attacks by 50%. The bonus is applied before subtracting the opponent's Magic Defense. The weapons that boost ice are the Black Mage's Frost Rod and the Ranger's Frost Bow. The Mix Elemental Power strengthens all elements and Magus Rod strengthens all elements bar water and holy.
Use[]
Blizzaga is acquired midway through the game, and unlike the lower-tier spells, is not usable through Red Magic. This means it can be used by Black Mages, but due to its relatively high MP cost, should not be used too regularly, though the MP cost can be halved by wearing the Gold Hairpin. The lower-tier Blizzara spell can be used more frequently, until party members' levels improve to the point where Blizzaga can be used more often in normal fights. As with other ice-elemental spells, Blizzaga should be used to target ice-elemental weakness.
Mystic Knights can also use Blizzaga as a Spellblade, once acquired. It is incredibly strong, as against non-Heavy enemy types, Blizzaga Spellblade has a chance to instantly kill enemies weak to ice; against Heavy types, it still greatly increases damage output, especially if they are weak to ice. Because Spellblade only consumes MP when used, Blizzaga completely outclasses Blizzara as a Spellblade, meaning the only reason to use Blizzara at this point is if another job is equipping the Spellblade skillset at a level below 5.
Blizzaga deals considerably more damage than summoning Shiva. Later in the game, when the Black Magic spell Flare, the White Magic spell Holy, the Time Magic spell Meteor, or the summons Leviathan and Bahamut, are available, they greatly outclass Blizzaga in terms of damage. Blizzaga may still deal comparable damage when targeting an enemy's elemental weakness, and when empowered via compatible equipment of Elemental Power, but for common use, Blizzaga is outclassed.
