Black Materia (ブラックマテリア, Burakku Materia?) is a recurring ability in the Final Fantasy series. It is an ability used exclusively by Sephiroth, based on the Black Materia from Final Fantasy VII.

Sephiroth

Black Materia is a ground magical HP attack for Sephiroth, learned at level 33. It require 40 CP to equip (20 when mastered), 300 AP to master, has Ranged High priority, and can induce Wall Rush when fully charged. By holding the Square, Sephiroth will charge energy and summon a meteor to hit opponents. Uncharged, the meteor is flung from above Sephiroth very quickly, but has short range. Fully charged, the meteor descends from above the opponent slowly, pushing them downwards and exploding upon contact with the ground.

Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy[]

Black Materia returns as one of Sephiroth's HP attacks, now requiring 30 CP to equip (15 when mastered), 150 AP to master, and is learned at level 28. It is otherwise identical to its previous incarnation.

Etymology[]

Materia means "matter" or "substance" in Latin, Spanish, and Italian; it also means "subject" in Italian and Spanish, and is the root of Portuguese "Matéria".

The name of this ability differs from the name of the Materia in Japanese as the Materia uses the Japanese word for black (, kuro?), while this ability uses the English word (ブラック, burakku?).
