The Black Dragon is a minor boss in the Dawn of Souls and succeeding versions of the original Final Fantasy. It is found in the sublevel of the Lifespring Grotto where Dark Bahamut asks the Warriors of Light to slay a certain number and species of his dragon underlings. It can also be randomly encountered in groups in the B37+ sublevels of the dungeon. The Black Dragon has the highest HP of all the dragons in its family, and also the second-highest Attack power. If the party must slay it, physical attacks will be the most effective means of dealing with it, as Flare and Holy are the only spells that do any significant damage.

Etymology

A dragon is a legendary creature, typically with serpentine or reptilian traits, which is featured in the myths of many cultures.

Chromatic dragon is a classification of dragon in the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons who are typically of evil alignment, in contrast to the metallic dragons, and their queen is Tiamat. White, black, green, blue and red dragons are the classic chromatic dragons. Final Fantasy has derived a lot of influence from D&D, especially the early series. Black dragons are the most vile-tempered and cruel, and breathe acid.
