The Black Dragon is an enemy in the Dawn of Souls and 20th Anniversary versions of Final Fantasy. It can be found as a random encounter in the Labyrinth of Time and the lower levels of Whisperwind Cove, as well as among the dragons of Dark Bahamut's trial in Lifespring Grotto. It is the strongest dragon of its type.

The party should Black Dragon encounters cannot be escaped from, nor can they be made to flee from Fear. The party should avoid falling below 300 HP lest they become vulnerable to Kill.

Etymology[]

A dragon is a legendary creature, typically with serpentine or reptilian traits, which is featured in the myths of many cultures.

Chromatic dragon is a classification of dragon in the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons who are typically of evil alignment, in contrast to the metallic dragons, and their queen is Tiamat. White, black, green, blue and red dragons are the classic chromatic dragons. Final Fantasy has derived a lot of influence from D&D, especially the early series. Black dragons are the most vile-tempered and cruel, and breathe acid.
