FF4PSP Cid Portrait
Cid Pollendina: Oh, shut up and help me remodel the Black Belt (Final Fantasy III) page!
Please expand this article into a full one. The following tasks need to be completed:
  • making a 2D and 3D weapon/armor table like here. Equipment stats do not belong here since the weapons/armor should link to their respectable list of Final Fantasy III weapon/armor page..

This request can be discussed on the associated discussion page. Remove this notice upon completion.

FF3-BlackBelt
Karateka sprite (NES).

Black belts are experts in unarmed combat. They can boost their attack power to deal massive damage, but be careful not to boost too much!

In-game description

The bearer of this certificate possesses fists of unstoppable force and is deemed worthy of the title of Master Black Belt.

In-job mastery certificate description

The Black Belt (空手家, Karateka?), also known as Karateka, is a Job class in Final Fantasy III. It is gained from the Water Crystal in the Famicom version of the game, while it is gained from the Earth Crystal in the 3D versions. Black Belts are masters of combat, able to use only their fists for massive damage. They are capable of linking their mind and body to store energy for an upcoming strike. Black Belt is considered to be a powered up version of the Monk job and one of the most powerful jobs in the game, dealing over 9999 damage even in the back row.

Each additional job level increases the bare handed attack of a Black Belt by 2, whilst each additional character level increases it by 3. As such, it is possible for a Black Belt to reach a maximum attack power of 491, dealing massive damage of 30,000-40,000 per hit, after defence. When using boost two times, it is possible to reach the max damage cap of 99,999.

Abilities

Famicom version

Storing up energy, the Black Belt will be able to do more damage, with the damage increasing even more if they are bare-handed. Using the command twice boosts the attack even more, but using it three times will hurt the Black Belt and release all the built-up energy.

3D versions

Just like the NES version, Boost will increase the Black Belt's power. The first use will double the next attack, a second use causes the damage to triple. However, if Boost is used three times in succession, it overloads, cancelling the charge and cutting the Black Belt's current HP in half.

Under the right circumstances, it is possible for a Black Belt to defeat Cloud of Darkness in a single hit.

Etymology

In martial arts, the black belt is a way to describe a graduate of a field where a practitioner's level is often marked by the color of the belt. The black belt is commonly the highest belt color used and denotes a degree of competence. It is often associated with a teaching grade though frequently not the highest grade or the "expert" of public perception.

Trivia

  • Black Belts can be considered analogous to Masters from the original Final Fantasy as both are upgrades to the Monk job class.
