The Biding Mantis is a Trophy Rare Game enemy in Final Fantasy XII. It can be found in Golmore Jungle. One is also fought in the Zodiac versions' Trial Mode in Stage 62, where a Biding Mantis usually spawns near the middle. In the Trial Mode, the Orochi (uncommon) and Zodiac Spear (rare) can be stolen from it.
Bestiary entry Edit
Derivation: Preying Mantis
Mutant with a carapace many times thicker than that of the typical preying mantis. Hunted in Golmore Jungle.
To find the Biding Mantis the player must have spoken to the "Huntmaster" in Phon Coast and defeated Thalassinon, which will trigger the start of the Rare Game quest. This mantis has four spawn points in the southern portion of the Needlebrake area of the Golmore Jungle, when the game clock is between 30 and 59 minutes.
The Biding Mantis is a great way to test the party's strength on higher level foes. If the Biding Mantis is lured to other enemies it will cannibalize them, growing in strength. Once at a very high level it can deal 9,999 damage to a character with a single strike.
Biding Mantis is fast and the player should cast Reverse on a character to make each attack heal the character. Physical attacks become useless on high levels so magick is the way to go. One can also use Quickenings, but most of the time they kill the enemy in one hit.
Mantises is an order of insects that contains over 2,400 species and about 430 genera in 15 families worldwide in temperate and tropical habitats. Most are in the family Mantidae. A common name, often applied to any species in the order, is "praying mantis" due to the typical "prayer-like" posture with folded fore-limbs, although the eggcorn "preying mantis" is sometimes used in reference to their predatory habits. In Europe and other regions, however, the name "praying mantis" refers to only a single species, Mantis religiosa.
