Deep crimson ring that absorbs fire damage. Equip on a yeti and see what happens.
Description
Berserker Ring, also known as Rage Ring,[1][2] is a relic in Final Fantasy VI. It grants Umaro the Throw Ally ability, which cases him to throw allies at opponents for increased damage, where damage is based on the ally's stats and equipment rather than Umaro's. Additionally, the relic grants Umaro a passive +5 Strength, nullifies lightning-elemental damage, and absorbs fire-elemental damage.
Obtained[]
Berserker Ring is found at the Cave on the Veldt and is won from the Dragon's Neck Coliseum by betting the Blizzard Orb and winning.
Mechanics[]
Umaro randomly throws a random ally at a random enemy on his turn. Thrown allies are freed from conditions like confuse or sleep, and damage is based on the equipment of the ally thrown rather than Umaro's.
The odds of Umaro using the attack with Berserker Ring equipped are:
Relic | Attack | Body Blow | Throw Ally | Snowstorm |
---|---|---|---|---|
Berserker Ring | 37% (95/255) | 25% (64/255) | 38% (96/255) | — |
Berserker Ring Blizzard Orb |
25% (63/255) | 25% (64/255) | 25% (64/255) | 25% (64/255) |
Use[]
Berserker Ring provides significant passive advantages to Umaro. Because all of Umaro's damage is physical (unless he has Blizzard Orb equipped), Strength is a great boost to his damage output, and the ability to avoid damage from two elements is extremely important given his limited armor selection. These benefits almost make it worth equipping the relic for these alone.
The Throw Ally ability granted by Berserker Ring is extremely beneficial. As well as removing statuses from party members, it can take advantage of strong combinations, such as allies with Genji Glove equipped. This means that when used, Umaro is best-suited to teams that already have strong physical attackers, as Umaro will have the chance to use Throw Ally and increase the party's damage output. Although Throw Ally depends entirely on the thrown ally's stats and equipment rather than Umaro's, it will still deal great physical damage when throwing party members with relatively low Strength.
Players can equip both Blizzard Orb (which grants Umaro the Snowstorm ability) and Berserker Ring at once. However, in most cases, this is not advisable. Snowstorm deals magic damage, and while it does boost Umaro's Magic stat, this does not play to Umaro's strength at all. Moreover, equipping both reduces the chance of using both abilities, meaning it does not allow the player to focus on one or the other. The only reason to do this would be to grant Blizzard Orb's ice-elemental absorption.
Better combinations for Berserker Ring are Gauntlet or later Bone Wrist. Gauntlet boosts Umaro's damage output by 50%; as Umaro cannot equip shields, there is no disadvantage to using this for him. Bone Wrist, on the other hand, provides considerable boosts to all of Umaro's stats and also boosts Throw Ally's damage.

Etymology[]
Berserker is a recurring job in the Final Fantasy series. Umaro is based on the Berserker job from Final Fantasy V, where the characters only attack on their turn. Berserker was originally a term for Norse warriors who fought with uncontrollable rage and reckless disregard for their own lives. The term itself is typically translated as "bear's skin" in reference to the animal skins Vikings would wear into battle. Theories about what causes berserkergang, the fury Berserkers go into, include possession by an animal spirit, drunken rage, and ritualistic dancing. Berserkers are often depicted in art as men with crazed eyes biting their shields in anticipation of battle.
