The character has given in to rage, fighting relentlessly with heightened attack power. Remove by casting Dispel.
Description
Berserk is a status in Final Fantasy XII that greatly increases the affected unit's damage output and charge speed, but they cannot be controlled, can only use their normal attack, and their gambits are off until the effect is removed.
Mechanics[]
Berserk doubles the speed at which ATB charges and magnifies the attack damage to 150% of normal damage (these effects also stack with Haste and Bravery). Units with Berserk are immune to Confuse (unless stepping on a Befuddling Gas trap) and cannot participate in Quickenings. As a standalone buff, Berserk eclipses both Haste or Bravery. Lure works on berserked enemies.
The formula for the duration is:
Berserk improves gun-users' damage whose damage otherwise is unaffected by the wielder's stats. Berserk stats with all damage boosters, like conditional augments.
Berserk shares other similarities to positive status effects in that the status has a blue font, is removed with Dispel rather than Esuna, is not blocked by Ribbons, and persists even if a Save Crystal is touched. Though, unlike other buffs, it can be resisted and thus miss, similar to Lure. Enemies and traps will also inflict it maliciously against the party.
Units with Berserk are immune to Confuse, though Befuddling Gas traps are an exception, as they inflict both statuses simultaneously.
Abilities[]
"Auto-Berserk" equipment | Berserker Bracers |
---|---|
Item | Bacchus's Wine |
Spell | Berserk (Arcane [OG] / Time Magicks [Zodiac]) |
Weapon | Avenger 10% |
Aboard the Shiva, Fran automatically enters Berserk while fighting Vossler.
Bacchus's Wine was made to always work in Zodiac versions, better than the Berserk spell, which has a chance of missing unless the caster equips the Indigo Pendant.
In the original PlayStation 2 version, Stamp can transfer positive statuses as well as negative to any target and thus can be used to bestow Berserk when the user has it; this was changed in the Zodiac versions so only ailments can be transferred with Stamp to enemies.
The ally-targeting gambit specifically for this status is called "Ally: status = Berserk". In the original version, the gambit can be bought for 50 gil after obtaining the Dawn Shard. The enemy-targeting gambit is called "Foe: status = Berserk", which in the original version is purchasable for 50 gil from gambit shops after the events at Draklor Laboratory. In the Zodiac versions, the gambits can be purchased for 70 gil after leaving Nalbina Dungeons.

Use[]
Berserk can be used both offensively to improve the player's own damage, and defensively, to make enemies use only their physical attack. Berserked enemies are best slowed and blinded.
Berserk is a great DPS-enhancer for a strong attacker who has potential for combos, especially when stacked with other buffs. The downside of Berserk is that it will prevent one from taking part in Quickenings and from attacking flying enemies if the character's weapon is short-ranged.
Against enemies, the player can use it to stop certain enemies from fleeing, and to force certain tough enemies to use their normal attacks over their potentially stronger special attacks, such as with White Mousse. The player can then also use Reverse to absorb the berserked enemies' attacks.
Berserker Bracers was added in the Zodiac versions, and is the superior method of bestowing Berserk as the player can control when to have the status; i.e. simply remove the accessory when they want to take control of the character.
