Inflicts berserk status on the target.

Description

Berserk, also known as Bserk,[1][2] is an Effect spell in Final Fantasy VI. It inflicts the berserk effect on one target, which causes them to uncontrollably attack opponents, but increases their physical damage by +50%. This can have both positive and negative effects, being usable offensively to enemies, but also as a support ability for party members. Celes learns the spell, and the spell is taught by magicite.

Berserk is also an enemy ability used by Level 50 Magic, Abaddon, and Flan Princess.

Obtained[]

Celes learns the spell naturally at level 40. Other party members can learn the spell through Phantom, taught at a rate of x3.

Mechanics[]

Berserk is affected by reflect and Runic.

Use[]

Berserk can be used in one of two ways. The first is offensively against enemies, to prevent them from casting spells or using similar powerful commands. Though the status does increase physical damage they deal, in the case of magic-focused enemies, this can still greatly reduce their overall damage dealt.

The second way to use the spell is as a support ability, to improve the physical damage of party members. On party members with a strong weapon and a high Strength stat, this can be beneficial to improve their damage output. However, in Final Fantasy VI, most physical damage comes from special character abilities, or relic-granted abilities (such as Jump or the Master's Scroll). If one were to use a character in this way, it would be better to simply bring Umaro, who has berserk innately, to battle.

Because Berserk is unaffected by the caster's stats, it can be taught to and used by any party member, and it may be better for non-spellcaster party members to use Berserk so spellcasters can preserve MP. Since the spell will not be used too often, it is low priority to teach to all party members.
