Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[]

In this RPG, born by a collaboration between Square Enix and Nintendo, an arrangement of "Battle 2" by Yoko Shimomura titled "Battling Culex" (対 クリスタラー戦, Tai Kurisutarā-sen?, lit. Versus: Crystaller Battle) is played when fighting the game's superboss, Culex. It is track 7 of disc 2 on the Super Mario RPG Original Sound Version.

The same arrangement returns as the boss theme against Culex in the Super Mario RPG Nintendo Switch remake. Another, orchestral arrangement of the theme is used for the Culex 3D version of the boss.

At the time of the original production, Shimomura was asked to choose any Final Fantasy battle theme she wanted to use, and she immediately started humming "Battle 2" from Final Fantasy IV and "Battle Theme 1" from Final Fantasy II. So, depending on the circumstances, it could have been "Battle Theme 1".[1]

Culex is Latin for "gnat", "midge", or "mosquito", and Culex is also a genus of mosquitoes. It is a reference to Golbez, named after a type of fly.
