Barnabas's mother[1], unnamed beyond her relation to Barnabas Tharmr, is a minor character in Final Fantasy XVI. She was a devout follower of the Circle of Malius faith, mainly composed of the surviving descendants of the "Children of Dzemekys" who used to inhabit the area in the vicinity of the now-lost Dzemekys Crystal. Back in ancient times her clan fled from Valisthea and took refuge in the outer continent, only returning generations later.[1] She was killed in a raid by the followers of a rival religion in an unknown point in time, but before her death instilled the doctrine of her faith onto her son, Barnabas Tharmr.

It is implied that his mother's death traumatized Barnabas, who afterward took the on the single-minded goal of fulfilling Ultima's plan (the god the Circle of Malius devouts worship) no matter the countless deaths bringing it to fruition would require. Barnabas has gained immortality in becoming a thrall of Ultima, but after long decades still thinks about his mother often, exemplified how Ultima shows illusions made manifest from Barnabas's memories to him as a means of reward, including images of his mother who cradles him as if he were still a baby.

Barnabas later alludes to his mother after forcibly supplying Clive with Odin's power at the cost of his own life, stating that he's "coming home" to her just before dying and having his akashic body disintegrate.
