Lost Chapter: Thieves of the Sky[]

Balthier arrives in the world of respite through the Ruins of Deserta. He meets Vaan in the party led by Mog and introduces himself as the "leading man of this little story". He claims to be hunting for treasure in the Torsions and declines to join such a large band of strangers. Though he is intrigued that the party has an airship — having been separated from his own, and his partner — he remains on his own for a while longer.

He meets up with the party again after he notices Rem among them, but is disturbed by how young she is, and even more so when she tells him she was already a soldier on her homeworld. He derisively hopes Mog has a good reason for recruiting so many children. Rem, Sazh, and Vaan persuade him into joining, and Balthier finally does on the understanding that he's only there to seek out treasure.

Having obtained a sufficiently valuable piece of armor, Balthier prepares to leave the party. Y'shtola senses that Balthier is more concerned with finding his lost partner than material gains. He concedes, as it's fitting for the leading man to occasionally be heroic.

Lost Chapter: Balamb Whiplash[]

Balthier first meets the newly-recruited Quistis as the group travels along a coast, and Quistis attempts to recount what was happening in her world up to the moment when she was taken into the world of respite. Although she remembers most of what happened during their adventure, she acknowledges that large gaps in her memory nevertheless exist from the use of guardian forces back in her homeworld. Balthier and the Onion Knight reassure her, noting that many were called into the world of respite without their memories intact. The conversation moves towards how the goddess Materia intentionally erased some of the warriors' memories as to keep them focused in their fight against the Torsions.

Act 2, Ch. 7: Respite's Authenticity[]

Sephiroth seizes Materia's throne and declares himself a god of the world of respite. As the warriors endeavor to stop him, they find themselves approaching a military installation resembling the Lucian countryside fortresses commandeered by Niflheim from Noctis's world. Vayne awaits them at the entrance and questions the integrity of Noctis's resolve, given the memories he lacks. Ignis challenges Vayne to a fight to demonstrate Noctis's strength and Balthier joins Noctis and Ignis. Vayne decides that Noctis is strong in spite of his lost memories because he can depend on his comrades. He envies Noctis for it before retreating through a torsion.

The warriors defeat Sephiroth and restore Materia to her throne. As they depart Materia's chambers, they explore the ruins of a city resembling Insomnia where they had battled Sephiroth before. Noctis pulls Balthier, Prompto, Ignis, Rinoa, and Squall aside to try to decipher Vayne's intentions and his particular interest in him. Balthier reminds Noctis that Vayne envied Noctis's strong bonds of friendship, something he lacked even as he lusted for power over Archadia as its new emperor. He suggests that Vayne might see some aspect of the person he wished to be within Noctis, an observation that Rinoa concurs with.
