Azys Lla is a location introduced in Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward. A floating continent shrouded in legend, this place was once the foremost center of research for ancient Allag.

Story[]

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)

Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward[]

A "floating continent" built by the ancient Allagan Empire, Azys Lla was at the forefront of Allagan science. It was in its halls that Allagan scientists perfected techniques for creating and twisting life, constructing automatons, and, perhaps most importantly, binding primals. The first three primals the Allagan Empire ever bound, known as the Warring Triad, were captured and held in duress within the Flagship at the center of Azys Lla, where they remain to this day. Azys Lla was created with land taken from Northern Othard; in order to raise it into the sky, the Allagans used a device to sever the flow of aether to region, creating a desolate wasteland that would later be known as the Burn. Azys Lla was abandoned after the fall of the Allagan Empire, though its automated facilities have continued to function even in the absence of their masters some five thousand years later.

Known as a forbidden land, Azys Lla was sought by both the Heavens' Ward for Thordan VII's plan to end the Dragonsong War by exploiting the power of the Warring Triad, while Regula van Hydrus acted on the behest of Varis zos Galvus to locate the method the Allagans invented to permanently trap primals.

FFXIV Entering Azys Lla

Cid breaking through the barrier with the power of Nidhogg's eye.

The Warrior of Light proceeded through each quadrant in search of access to the Flagship, under the advice of the Guidance node. At the Gamma Quadrant, a confrontation with Regula van Hydrus ended with Alphinaud, Y'shtola, and Estinien holding off the Garleans while the Adventurer went on.

FFXIV Tiamat meets Midgardsormr

Midgardsormr reunites with one of his children, Tiamat.

Reaching a dead end at the Delta Quadrant, Midgardsormr asked that the Warrior of Light meet someone here. Atop a hill, they encountered the bound Tiamat, one of the great wyrms. She recounted how Bahamut fell defending Meracydia and was summoned as a primal, only to be sealed in Dalamud by their enemies. Upon learning the tale, the last Crystal of Light reactivated, fully restoring Hydaelyn's blessing. Midgardsormr agreed to lend the Warrior of Light his wings, transforming into a dragon steed to fly to the Flagship and confront the archbishop.

Though the Archbishop was defeated in the Aetherochemical Research Facility, his actions had begun to stir the Warring Triad from their slumber. Faced with the threat of both the Warring Triad unleashing their wrath on Eorzea, the Scions began preemptive strikes against the three primals while still in containment. Compounding matters were Regula van Hydrus' search for the secret behind the binding technology, the Genesis Expression.

The first to begin awakening was Sephirot, the Fiend, who was bound in Containment Bay S1T7. Entering with Krile and the mysterious Unukalhai, the ancient primal was defeated by the Warrior of Light before he could regain full strength. Regula then made an effort to break into the facility to obtain an Allagan Tomelith, but was driven off at the Triad Control. A Garlean soldier later unwittingly freed several thralls of Sophia, the Goddess, having stumbled into a trap originally lain by her followers against ancient Allag. Sophia was eliminated in Containment Bay P1T6 before she could cause further harm.

Spoilers end here.

FFXIV Azys Lla Landing

The area near Cid's airship landing point.

Azys Lla is located above Abalathia's Spine, making it the only other area in the region aside from the Sea of Clouds. It is accessed late in Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward's storyline, upon completion of the quest "The First Flight of the Excelsior."

This zone permits the use of flying mounts, but unlike other areas, full attunement is granted automatically through the Main Scenario quests.

Aetherytes[]

Boss FATE. Life of Brain 59-63 Beta Quadrant (x30 y7) 15 minutes Defeat the chimera brain.
Thousands of years of uncontrolled reproduction and mutation have seen one chimera's cranial capacity nearly double, resulting in a creature too clever...and deadly for its own good. Slay the chimera brain, and end its line.
Battle FATE. The Monster Mass 59-63 Beta Quadrant (x37 y6) 15 minutes Defeat the empuses.
Ages of neglect have taken their toll on the functionality of the equipment housed in the Biomass Incubation Complex. A malfunction has caused the machines to awaken and begin the mass regeneration of empuses─hideous creatures engineered to kill.

Battle FATE. The Root of Evil 59-63 Beta Quadrant (x34 y9) 15 minutes Defeat the mutated corpse flowers.
Water is a scarce resource on the corrupted islands of Azys Lla. To survive, the few plants which grow in the area must extend their roots to any sort of moisture available...even if that includes the chemically enriched incubation fluid in which chimeras are grown.
Battle FATE. The Mystery Machine 59-63 Dreadnaught Landing (x37 y25) 15 minutes Defeat the magitek vanguards L-1.
In an attempt to bypass Allagan security, the VIth Imperial Legion has off-loaded a small army of magitek vanguards L-1 from their dreadnaught and deployed them throughout the Gamma Quadrant. While their main targets are clockwork sentries, the machina could pose a deterrent for the allies of Eorzea. Deactivate the machina and cast the rubble to the lands below.
Battle FATE. Rampant Speculation 59-63 The Cathedral (x24 y28) 15 minutes Defeat the imperial speculators.
Imperial speculators are scouring the Gamma Quadrant for military technology that they may take back to Garlemald and incorporate into their armies. Stop the imperials before they can report to the Gration.
Battle FATE. Put the Knives Down 59-63 Castrum Solus (x34 y36) 15 minutes Defeat the adamantite claws.
When not used to tear enemies of the Empire limb from limb, adamantite claws are often employed at construction sites for digging holes, demolishing old buildings, and lifting objects. Here, they seem intent on tearing you limb from limb.
Boss FATE. Scared Sylla 59-63 Castrum Solus (x34 y36) 15 minutes Defeat Sylla mal Albinus and the magitek vanguard S-1.
Senior magitek technician Sylla mal Albinus has arrived from Garlemald to conduct his inspection of the location chosen for the construction of Castrum Solus. Act quickly, for a similar chance to apprehend the high-ranking imperial official may not present itself again.

Battle FATE. Yak It Up 59-63 The Pappus Tree (x6 y35) 15 minutes Defeat the meracydian brobinyaks.
The Allagan Empire is infamous for its wanton manipulation of the gods' creations─the Meracydian brobinyak being only one of many examples. Put these pitiful creatures out of their misery and restore nature's equilibrium.
Boss FATE. No Greater Goryshche 59-63 Delta Quadrant (x12 y33) 15 minutes Defeat Goryshche.
Even the mighty dragons themselves were subject to the Allagan Empire's incessant tinkering with the very laws of nature─Goryshche is one such product of that imperial hubris. Aimlessly roaming the Azys Lla wastes, the multi-headed abomination silently seeks an end to five thousand years of suffering.
Battle FATE. Harvest Moon 59-63 Alpha Quadrant (x12 y17) 15 minutes Defeat the clockwork harvestmen.
An alarum blares from some unknown source, accompanied by the following message: “Administrative node malfunction! Unit deployment error. Automatic recall failed. Removal request submitted. Authorization code 5670-2H5BB-Q90. Repeat. Administrative node malfunction...”
Boss FATE. Out of Sight, Out of Mind 59-63 Quarantine Block (x9 y21) 5 minutes Defeat Stheno.
Data retrieved from tomestones discovered in the Delta Quadrant provide proof that the chimerical failure code-named Stheno was one of the reasons the quarantine block was originally constructed.
Battle FATE. A Room without Books 59-63 Delta Quadrant (x12 y29) 15 minutes Defeat the meracydian amphipteres.
Extensive manipulation of not only the body, but the mind, has left most of the Allagans' creations soulless horrors who only act upon instinct. The Meracydian amphiptere will simply kill without thought as to why it does so, death being the only cure to its disease.
Battle FATE. Curiously Strong Things 59-63 Beta Quadrant (x31 y12) 15 minutes Defeat the reptoids.
While it is unclear how they were utilized in battle, it is clear from their muscular build and violent disposition that reptoids were designed for one purpose, and one purpose only─killing.

Spawn conditions:

  • 36 hour spawn window begins after server reset or after 36 hours have passed since last appearance.
  • The weather will change to Hyperelectricity Hyperelectricity and Proto Ultima will appear in the skies of Azys Lla shortly before it appears. The FATE will spawn once the weather returns to normal.

Musical themes[]

The main theme for Azys Lla is "Order Yet Undeciphered". "Safety in Numbers" plays in Helix, while "The Emperor's Wont" plays in the vicinity of the Gration and the VIth Legion's outpost. "Primogenitor" plays near Tiamat's prison at Antithesis.

Uniquely among Heavensward's main zones, the regular battle theme "Melt" does not play during enemy encounters in Azys Lla; instead, the main background theme plays at all times, even while fighting enemies.

Behind the scenes[]

Heavensward Art 002

Concept art.

Azys Lla is a homage to the Floating Continent of Final Fantasy VI, with the presence of the Warring Triad.

The floating continent was first alluded to in the Ixal tribe quests added in Patch 2.35, as the lost continent "Ayatlan" that the Ehcatl Nine seek to return to with their new airship.

During a developer interview before the release of Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, it was off-handedly mentioned that a lot of research into bioengineering was done to create the area.[citation needed] Unlike the other zones, Azys Lla was largely kept obscured in pre-release information, with only a few glimpses of concept art and screenshots provided; even the Patch Notes for 3.0 concealed the name. The developers stressed that it would be a full open-world zone, rather than just an instanced raid.
