Azulmagia is a boss and one of the Demons of the Rift in Final Fantasy V. Locked up in the Dimension Castle dungeons, he will attack the party if they answer affirmatively to his question of whether they are heroes. In the Finest Fantasy for Advance and the now discontinued 2013 Matrix Software versions, he is also fought in the Sealed Temple's Cloister of the Dead.

He is a notable encounter for all the Blue Magic he can use.

Battle[]

Azulmagia has 17 of the 30 Blue Magic spells in the game, and casting certain Blue Magic spells on him will cause him to learn them and start using them on the party, giving him a total of 28 of the 30 Blue Magic spells he can actively use (he will not use Transfusion and Moon Flute). His 17 spells can be learned by any Blue Mage in the party, if they have not learned them already. On top of the ones he already uses, Azulmagia can learn:

When Azulmagia learns a Blue Magic spell, for the next 3 to 4 of his turns, he will have a 2/3 chance of using that particular spell against the party and the remaining 1/3 chance to use his other Blue Magic. If he is hit by the same Blue Magic again (either by the party or reflected against himself), he will learn the spell again and reset the turn counter.

He is weak to Poison element. He is also vulnerable to darkness status, but has no actions that rely on his accuracy.

For defeating him, the party unlocks a save point within the castle.

Azulmagia is the only source of the Titan's Gloves in the game.

Strategy[]

If the player uses Self-Destruct on this boss, he will repeat it, making him possibly one of the easiest bosses in the game. However, if the player does not have access to Blue Magic while fighting him, or has not learned Self-Destruct, the battle may prove to be a little more difficult.

Many of Azulmagia's spells are reflectable, so summoning Carbuncle or wearing Reflect Rings can greatly aid the player. Azulmagia's tendency to cast spells that he just learned can be used against him; teaching him Level 3 Flare will cause him to use it to no effect if the party is not vulnerable to the spell (or bounce off the party for high damage to himself if Reflect is used, as he himself is vulnerable to its effect). Alternatively, teaching him Magic Hammer will cause him to likely spend several turns trying to do MP damage instead of hurting the party.

If neither are an option, it is best to kill him quickly; Bio Spellblade can do very high damage to him, and the spell itself can also do decent damage with Magus Rod equipped. Otherwise, it is best to rely on physical attacks as Azulmagia's magic defense is much higher than his defense. He may lower damage through Mighty Guard; using Dispel can eliminate his defensive buffs.

Without Azulmagia learning Level 3 Flare or Aqua Breath, he can only knock out multiple party members at once through Level 5 Death. From his standard set of spells, ????, Mind Blast, Flame Thrower and Aera are the only ones that deal direct damage. Most of them should only hit for moderate to minor damage except for ????, which is fixed damage based on how much damage Azulmagia has taken and has no possible way to mitigate. Because of this, healing should not be a primary focus. Azulmagia mainly focuses on status ailments and dealing instant death, so having Recover and either Raise, Revive or plenty of Phoenix Downs helps to keep the party alive and healthy. Mixing Lifeshield can also protect against the instant death magic.

Etymology[]

Azulmagia is a corruption of magia azul, which means "blue magic" in Portuguese and Spanish.

It is called Apocalypse in the Japanese version. Apocalypse (Ancient Greek: ἀποκάλυψις apokálypsis, from ἀπό and καλύπτω meaning "uncovering"), translated literally from Greek, is a disclosure of knowledge, i.e., a lifting of the veil or revelation. In religious contexts it is usually a disclosure of something hidden. Today, it is commonly used in reference to any prophetic revelation or so-called end time scenario, or to the end of the world in general.
