Field sprite.

Avizzard is an enemy from Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. They are winged creatures wielding twin blades. They can be found in the Lava Dome.

Stats[edit | edit source]

Battle[edit | edit source]

They have higher HP than other enemies and are not weak to any attack types the player has, so they can be a minor nuisance, especially since they also have status attacks.

The creature has two phases. First it glares at the party while dual-wielding swords. The right-hand sword shatters after it takes enough damage.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Avizzard is known as "Gargoyle" in the Japanese release. Gargoyles were initially ordinary stone statues built on rooftops to let rainwater above flow down to the ground through certain paths. The statues were usually carved as monsters and strange creatures, which later spawned the belief that gargoyles are the guardians of the buildings they live in.

In the German release, Avizzard is known as Baphomet. Baphomet is an imagined pagan deity, product of Christian folklore concerning pagans.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Avizzard's has 666 HP. This number is called "number of the beast" in most manuscripts of chapter 13 of the Book of Revelation of the New Testament, and thus also in popular culture. In modern popular culture, 666 has become one of the most widely recognized symbols for the Antichrist or, alternatively, the Devil.
