Automatically casts Reflect in battle.

Description

Auto-Reflect is a support ability in Final Fantasy IX that every permanent party member can learn. It bestows them with automatic Reflect status while in battle for the cost of 15 Magic Stones.

Obtained[]

Auto-Reflect is learned from the Reflect Ring Add-on for variable amounts of AP; Eiko and Vivi learn it the fastest at 70 AP, while Freya, Steiner, and Zidane learn it the slowest at 95 AP.

Reflect Ring is won from the Treno Auction House, synthesized in the Black Mage Village (before the endgame), Treno and Lindblum (after returning from the Outer Continent), Alexandria, and Daguerreo. The earliest it can be obtained is during the time Princess Garnet and Captain Steiner visit Treno with Marcus, from the auction house, where it is sold only once.

Mechanics[]

The wearer has automatic Reflect whenever they are in combat: even life spells bounce from a KO'd party member who has Auto-Reflect, even if the Reflect's visual effect is absent. Any spells targeted at the character with Auto-Reflect will bounce onto a random member of the enemy party, unless the caster has Reflect-Null equipped. If the entire party is under Reflect, group-casting a spell on them will reflect it up to four times onto random enemies, appearing as a single spell rather than multi-hit. A single enemy takes all four hits in a spell with quadruple power, and the damage will not be halved like group-cast spells normally are.

Auto-Reflect cannot be dispelled. Reflect works with most Black and White Magic spells; the Black Magics it does not work against are Osmose, Drain, Comet, Meteor, and Doomsday. The White Magics it does not work against are Dispel and Jewel. Blue Magics (and eidolons in the case of Carbuncle that targets the player's party) ignore Reflect.

Use[]

Though Auto-Reflect is one of the more expensive support abilities to equip in regard to Magic Stones required, it is especially potent in avoiding enemy spells. It can be set up to complement Reflectx2 for Vivi to empower his Black Magic without having to use Focus first, and if every party member has Reflect, he can group-cast spells off the party onto an enemy for eight-fold damage.

Auto-Reflect is useful in the battle against Ozma, reflecting its Mini and Berserk spells back at it (though they have no effect on it), as there are no support abilities to protect against these ailments. While these animations play out, the party's Auto-Regen also has time to replenish the party.

An alternative to Auto-Reflect would be to cast Reflect and summon Carbuncle in battle, but when bestowed via these methods, the status lapses; as the timer runs during animations, Reflect often wears off before the player can get the best use out of it.
