In "Problem Solving", Chadley gives the party an Assess materia for "Chadley's Report". Further copies can be bought from Chadley for 1000 gil apiece.
In INTERmission, Yuffie starts with an assess materia already equipped to her; it is especially useful right from the start for determining enemies' elemental weaknesses for her Elemental Ninjutsu.

The Assess ability can provide crucial battle information on the fly, and also provide useful information for Battle Intel. It costs only one ATB charge to use, and once leveled up, will assess all enemies at once. Even if an enemy type was already assessed, it is nonetheless worthwhile to assess them again in later portions of the game, when their HP and weaknesses may have changed.
Using Assess on enemies nets some rewards from Chadley. During "The Town That Never Sleeps", the assess materia level matters to a portion of a quest for Chocobo Sam, where Cloud and Johnny are looking for "the sauce" from the inn's vending machine for the materia shop keeper.
The following battle targets can be assessed, but will not appear in Enemy Intel, and thus are not needed for bestiary completion:
- Airbuster's hands
- Reno's EM mines (Ch.8) and pyramid mines (Ch.12)
- Rude's helicopter
- Proto trypapolis (clones)
- Jenova Dreamweaver's tentacles
- The Arsenal's barrier drones
- The final boss's ice crystals
- Ramuh's sparks (INTERmission)
- Gigantipede's drones (INTERmission)
