Etymology[edit | edit source]
Targe was a general word for shield in late Old English. Its diminutive, target, came to mean an object to be aimed at in the 18th century.
The Japanese name of the item was named after Marshal Michel Ney, a French soldier and military commander during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. He was one of the original 18 Marshals of the Empire created by Napoleon.
